Last September I went to a local tailgate show at the Kennedy Mine in Jackson. There was a dealer who I know quite well and as I was digging through a bucket of miscellaneous rocks I came across a drab brown/red agate about 4" across. There was no outer indications of anything inside besides drab brown/red. It was a Brazilian Agate but knowing that was no help. I asked him how much and he said $1 so I got it. Yesterday I got around to slabbing it and boy, what a suprise! What it looked like on the outside. All the slabs Whats in the slabs What do you think? Some nice stuff? Bob

I was thinking Montana at first but there are no subsurface fractures and the outer skin doesn't show any river tumbling characteristics. The body color just doesn't seem right for Montana either. Bob

I've picked up some Montana "mud agates" like that. Usually too dark inside to be worth cutting, but that one shows some nice patterns. On the other hand, I've also cut a couple of Brazils with that turtle back pattern in the clear areas (first and second slabs).
Either way, it's a great rock for $1!

You are right lack of fractures pretty much rules out Montana. There is a very similar Russian stone I see at shows. Never have seen the rough but very similar inclusions as Montana. Russians are pretty proud of it.

Almost looks like some of your favorite Montana's. I can see why you were so pleased.

I like the third pic with the face next to your thumb. I don't have a clue as to what kind of ag it is , but i'd say that you got a smokin deal.
