I'm a total noob at cabbing. Someone has offered me teh following ...
Hello, I have a brand new Lortone Lapidary arbor with a 6 inch by 1 inch fine stone and on the other side a 2 1/2 inch by 6 wheel that takes a sandpaper sleeve. Some hose there for water spray. No pump or motor but can be picked up for cheap elsewere.
IS this worth buying and what is a fair price?

Sounds like an old one. It'll get you started but you'll want to buy some new wheels. A 100 grit diamond wheel and an expando drum would work.

A picture and an asking price would help people here to answer your question

I haven't seen it yet. I'm just trying to get an idea if its worth even going to see. They're asking $50.

sounds like it might be worth the trip, especially since the words Brand new are involved

The arbor is worth $50. Sounds like a Rough wheel(maybe 100 grit silicon carbide) and a expando from description. Ken

I agree with Ken. The 6" expando alone would cost you around $60.00. In the 2008 Lortone catalog, that arbor was $220.00. Sounds like a good buy to me. I'd jump on it. Don

I've seen those listed for more than $50. A new 6" expanding drum alone would cost you that much.
I agree with Curt: it's enough to get started and learn whether cabbing is for you, but if you continue you're probably going to want more wheels.

I might add that I have the same setup in addition to my Genie. I have 2 diamond wheels for roughing out cabs, and 2 expandos for sanding. The ends of the shaft are threaded 1/4 - 20 to take the spin on disks, which makes them a very versatile machine which doesn't take a lot of room. Don

Does it have a motor? It is a really good deal if so. Check for bearings ok (move shaft up/down/forward/back). They mount the bearings in rubber isolators so some movement may be felt. Should turn smooth and easy. Check the expando drum. If it is standard size look for cracked rubber. It's a great deal even if you have to buy a diamond wheel and new drum. Also check pan and hood for rust/condition. Lortone is notorious for thin tin that rusts out if not maintained.

Sounds good to me, if I had seen the ad, I would be on the road to pick it up, especially with the words 'Brand new' in the description.

Made contact with the seller (Was referred by someone else) turns out he is an occassional visitor to the cowboy church that I pastor and he's going to throw in a motor as well. I'll pick it up between Christmas and New Years and post pics after I get it. Thanks for all the help!

Welcome to the world of cabbing. With a little care and maintenance, and a few more belts and wheels, you'll get many happy years of use out of that setup.
