I think it's pretty unfair to equate scientists in the public sector working on a vaccine for the flu to those working for the pharmaceutical companies trying to come up with clever ways to patent the production of new drugs based on research that was largely carried out at public Universities -- for example.
Let's not confuse a person's motivation to make a better life for their kids, from one that leads them to pursue a career path based on the potential for reward at all cost. This is not to say that there aren't people like that, but they are in all fields, not just science. Science is a business, and we really should be asking, "Who is in control of the business?" You don't really think it's the scientists do you?

Whether they're making a flu vaccine or a drug, the motivation is money. I just imagine there is more to be had in drugs

Mel- again I am amazed! Also if you search info on opals you will eventually stumble upon stories of active opal forming regions (mainly Australia) "fossilizing" items in a very short period of time (ie the cat that was lost in the mine 50 years ago being found Opalized, and an opalized human skull) not sure If I believe those stories (never seen any pictures) but there is pretty good descriptions of how fast opal can build up. Guess what I'm trying to say is that not all "fossilazation" is a lengthy process. Interesting, Stefan. If it is true about the fast acting opalization, you can bet the scientists are doing all they can to keep it quiet. I remember back in the 80's an Australian doctor said that ulcers were caused by a bacteria that could be easily treated w/ one course of antibiotics. He was smeared across the world as a quack for years. Turns out he was right. A lot of money for the drug companies down the tubes ...

I may be overlooking something but I don't see what this has to do with scientist. The drug companies are raising the price, not the scientist.
What I was refering to are scientist that work off government grants. If they don't go along with whatever administration is in power, they don't get grants. Right now it's climate change. The ones that disagree with climate change don't get grants so they twist the facts to get the money. Scientific truth goes out the window.
And the ones that get grant money to study why mice have sex or some other foolery should be in jail along side the person that gave them the money.

Todd I've also heard that pet wood can be made in a laboratory in a matter of weeks. This isn't to say it happens in nature that fast, but it's very possible the time has been greatly exaggerated.

When new information threatens the economic interests of the establishment, the result is often a lot of political arguing with less and less regard for hard data, and more and more emphasis on theories and ultimately ideology. Most of the scientists though are just trying to survive in a system that they don't like anymore than you or I. If they were only in it for the money, they sure as heck wouldn't have gone into science. Blaming the scientists only serves to let off the hook the powers to be that want to throw the truth out the window.
I don't know about pet wood, but somebody made a killing selling pet rocks. I don't think it took much more than a few weeks to do it.

Fossils are cool deals. I'm amazed at the various species there is in the world. I really wish Oregon have more available to collect, but all the good ones are protected for a private playground for universities.
I've heard petrified wood takes as little as a couple hundred years to start it's process.
You know I could throw a wrench in the whole works - I remember seeing a religious scientist on T.V. And in his theory the world is only 6000 years old and the proces of carbon dating is nothing but pure BS (in my opinion). - Makes me chuckle!

I believe you mean the "New Earthers", sometimes written as "New Flat Earthers", which is more self-explanatory. No, I'm not making a joke.

If one doesn't understand the difference between the scientific method (look it up for those who mistakenly think it means that theories can be proven) and faith, nothing in this world will ever make much sense. Every scientist that ever lived would tell you that the more they knew, the more they realized just how much they didn't know. THAT is what motivates scientists. Generalizations and disinformation about so called scientific "facts", or the erroneous assertion that others have made such claims, or about the very nature of scientists themselves, do not contribute to informed discussion, quite the contrary. Well said! I'd also like to point out that there is a difference between fossilization and petrification (as happens with hats and cats lost in mines.) They are two different processes.

I have searched for the artical on the opalization process (I guess a petrification not fossilaztion) and I find several references to the cat (and the skull) but no actual pictures or first hand accounts. Man I can't believe the scientist at G@@gl$ have failed me . Oh well.
