Anybody here ever have one of those days when you are trying to cut cabs and nothing seems to go right. I bet I broke 3 potential cabs today because they slipped out of hand and fell on the floor. The dop wax wouldn't hold and it wasn't too cold either. My garage is somewhat heated I don't even need to wear a jacket out there. All I got done today was on tiny little Birdseye Rhyolite that I can't get a gold bell cap to fit properly. It's OK but it isn't my favorite. Thanks for looking....Bob

Bob, I had some preforms dopped up for probably 3 months and when I started on them the other day, they all started dropping off. I have a heater in my shop so it's fairly warm. and My water was warm. I'm wondering if moisture got between the wax and stick. I did a few right after I waxed em up and they did fine. Just a thought to help

I did the above cab without dopping and I have been having a bit of success without, but I think I still prefer the stick. Time will tell.

That's a nice cab Bob. Sorry about the others. Maybe find a carpet remnant or a thick rug to put under foot while cabbing. Then if you drop one, hopefully it will be cushioned enough that it won't break.

But I have been considering getting one of those cushiony rubber mats to stand on instead of that hard cold concrete.

I hate it when that happens! It happened today when I picked out a set of cabs I had finished and was going to send to someone. One of the earrings fell out of my hand on the cold garage floor and shattered... i haven't even found all the pieces yet. I finally just set them all down and walked away! I have found that if my dop wax is not hot enough or the stone isn't real hot, it just won't stick. Sometimes, you have to break down and use a drop of super glue. Fran

My very first finished cab was a gorgeous chrysocolla that looked like a nebula astrophoto from the Hubble Telescope. Of course, I just had to hit the cerium oxide on the flat lap just one more time - - it snagged and went flying across the barn. I found all the pieces in a small area on the concrete but didn't have the heart to pick them up for another two weeks... I swore I'd never fall in love with any of my cabochons again.

Just suck it up. Ain't no telling how many have gone flying with wings all their own that I was doing. Wait until you have a $100+ knife and are finished except for buffing out the brass and it catches and goes flying and you break the scales on the wall or floor. Has happened several times and it probably won't be the last, if I keep doing it. Murphy's law......if it is a very good cab, that is the one that will escape you. If it is a junker and you are just messing around with it, it will turn out perfect. Ken

During a recent cabbing frenzy in my utility room a dozen or so flew away, mostly behind the furnace, water heater, washer, dryer... The furnace ought get replaced in the next few years, maybe I'll find some then...

Y'all are a bunch of whimps! Think of us mobile picnic table cabbers... and the cab sprouts wings... and lands somewhere in the grass... and the cab is green... LOL. JO
