Hey all!
Okay .... finally finished jury duty today and maybe now I can start the new year.
Just FYI .... I was selected for jury duty last week and after 1 1/2 days of selection process for a Domestic Violence case (we have given our verdict and therefore it is now public record ... so we can talk about it now) which we found the defendant guilty of the greater charge of inflicting injury on spouse and not the lesser charge of Battery On Spouse.
This jury duty lasted a week and was a great experience. I would highly suggest and recommend if any of you are called to serve, it is eye opening. I would do it again in a heartbeat.
Now I am trying to get my rock wings back and and get busy. 2010 posed a few issues for me and some obstacles that I personally have had trouble getting over. Not to mention that the economy has given me pause to worry more than usual about if I will have a job in 6 months.
ANYWAY .... I do not say all this for sympathy or anything else ... just stating that every day I get up, I try to be here and I try to hug my friends here and give it the best I can every day.
As Always!!
ps .... I will be making another post for leather. I can actually hear mooing in my living.

Jury duty is fine except when you own your own business. If my wife or I had to serve jury duty for a week, we would loose a weeks salary. In Texas work is not an excuse. They pay something like $10 a day. Personally I'm all for contract jurors.
Hope 2011 is a much better year for ya!

I've always wanted to be called for jury duty, but so far haven't. I get the difference in pay from my employer, maybe that's thanks to the bargaining of my union (yeah, that's a poke at Mel ;D)... My wife got called, and said it was BS. I still wanna do it once for the experience.
As far as your job, Julie, I think we're all in that boat. You just have to believe that when one door closes, another opens. Being positive about a situation really makes things easier. It's good to see you around again, and I hope everything goes well for you in '11.
Take care, Nate

Curt, I'm 100% with you on contract jurors. There are probably a lot of retired people that would jump at an opportunity to pick up a few bucks while performing a cicic duty. Where do I sign up? Bob

I forgot to mention that my wife got a summons just before the new year but when she called in to see when she needed to report they said they had enough jurors already and excused her. She was really disappointed. It would have been the first time for her. She was a hairdresser so she always got excused in the past. Bob

"She was a hairdresser so she always got excused in the past."
??
You'll have to explain that one for me, Bob.

"She was a hairdresser so she always got excused in the past."?? You'll have to explain that one for me, Bob. I'm guessing it is similar to Curt's situation. Hair dressers are basically self-employed and are basically losing income for the $10 a day stipend. Am I right??

They usually get me every 2-3 years.I don't mind but like you said there are a lot of retired people out there that would love to do it. We get a little better pay here $50 a day. Keith

I got called for grand jury duty in '09 - '10 and we met every tuesday, all day, for 16 weeks and I'd do it again in a new york second. It gives a whole new meaning to understanding state statues. I recommend reading some of your state statues because there is information in them that can keep you out of a world of hurt -- for lack of knowledge

It isn't just self-employed people who lose money when serving--some employers make up the difference, some don't. Jury duty is simply one of the rather small citizen obligations of living in this country; some people take the obligation seriously, some don't.
Sure wish I could serve on a jury--at least once! Thank you, MyNewHobby, for sharing your experience and the positive side of it.

Because most hairdressers are self employed they can generally get excused from jury duty particularly if its a long case. They never refused her request to be excused. Bob

Bobby, I hope I didn't give the impression in your my that I thought your wife was shirking her civic duty. That was not my intent. Rather, many who are employed by others can be replaced at least temporarily by others on the same job, while some, both self-employed and employed by others, cannot. The test used by courts that I am familiar with is whether there is a special hardship for the person. So, if you are employed by another but your presence at your job is crucial and no one can fill in you will be excused. If you are self-employed, but it is a slow season or someone else can fill in, you will not be excused.
The point I was trying to make, rather ineptly it seems, is that self-employed people are not the only ones who lose pay because they are not at work--losing pay is not the test. Doctors and lawyers are *always* excused from federal court (before they even get there) because no one can fill in for them. It doesn't matter whether they are self-employed or not.

Hi Everyone!!!
Wow .... I am so glad to see this post take off the way it did.
I would do jury duty again in a heartbeat! I learned so much in just 5 days and I went in thinking it was cut and dry. Oh boy, was I wrong .... But it was cool nonetheless.
As for pay ... I understand 100% about self employed and know that it can really suck when finances are already tenuous. I have been lucky. My boss/company policy states that he will pay for 5 days. I was there for 4 1/2. Phew!!!!
Kasag .... I was talking with a friend last weekend and they said they had done the Grand Jury as well. The really cool thing she talked about was hearing so many different cases. Now that would really give my little brain some awesome feed to munch. I would love to do it. I was actually told by one of the other jurors that I should volunteer or throw my hat into the pool if I can. She said she would do it again in a heartbeat.
NDK .... thank you so much ... I miss everyone here so much and have already made some major strides to get back here full time.
I have quit 99.9% Facebook and about 99.7% the outside Facebook online game I play as I just want to have a real life again and maybe get off my butt and get out there hounding and meeting others. Meeting Jo (sorry have to say a few more times to remind myself it was real) and Bill and Angie just made my heart hurt as I wasn't giving anything here for the longest time. That to me made me a selfish person. But ... here I am .... my plain old goofy self with my sappy (cannot help it) moments and hopefully I can become CRAZY JULIE (waves at Weeshan) once again and forever.
Gotta find that silly leather post .....
As Always .... (wanders off in search of leather post and bowl of water)
