While waiting and waiting for my new job I have been doing a bit of cutting. I may not get much of a chance when I start my new job as I will be working away. Heres a few opal inlays That I have just completed, common opal with dendrites inlayed with thin pieces of precious opal I dropped the stone with the pink line when I was putting it in the dop stick and it broke in half, as the opal was already set I glued it back together rather than throwing it. I was having a bad time dopping and dropped another also and the corner chipped off that but I saved that one by just rounding it off. Bill

They not only look very good, but are so interesting because they show the variety of opal, from common to noble.
Adrian PS. You healed that fracture perfectly, it'n not visible at all.

Bill, Does the inlay fit tight enough that no filler is necessary between the precious opal and the setting or is the black material some kind of grout like glue. If so what do you use to fill the crack between the two parts of the stone?

Mel I just dremmel out my hole and glue the opal to the bottom and then I grind the m both to the desired shape and color in the opal, I just use a black permanant marker to make the black in thehole and on the opal , though I am thinking of only blackening the opal and then it may not have such a noticable surround. Comments appreciated. Bill

Interesting work. When I do Instarsia, I mix a bit of carbon into the 5-minute epoxy. The color stays even throughout the bond and the bond between the stones is not affected. Method works great to bring out the color in translucent material.

They look great. Could you not add black pigment to your epoxy? And use a clear CA glue around the opal as filler? Would eliminate the black edge. That would rally look super. I use the CA glue (gel) to fill minute cracks in stones and on the knives where they meet the other parts of the knife. I love opal. Ken

Nice results, Bill, though I hate to think that work could come between you and your opal. Sad, really. I think you need to buy a mine so you can sell rough to support your grinding habit Great shine on those. Tony
