Ok, I'll jump into this contest fever. But I want something that can't be looked up on the internet or something a little less subjective than naming a cab (but those were fun too!). Here is the challenge and the prize. I figure it is a $10+ slab of fracture free Owyhee Picture Jasper. The area pictured is about 13cm x 13cm as I measure it. The image is 600x600 pixel, so about 46 pixel/cm. (thumbnail) The challenge is to use this slab most effectively. Use your favorite graphics program to cut cab blanks from this slab. Assume you have a band saw and can cut pretty much without waste. But keep your sizes realistic. (No amazing images that turn out to be only 3mm high.) Post the images of the set of blanks you propose cut. I can't stop someone from taking inspiration from what you post, but you can come back and modify your submission after you see what others do if they draw on you original idea. Fair's fair. Try to get the most spectacular blanks, but also try to get as much use of the stone as you can. In other words balance the two goals. Using every bit of the slab may bring down the overall quality of you set. Going only for one large spectacular blank will lower your efficiency. You can also include explanations of how you would use each blank, e.g., wire wrap pendant, shelf specimen, ear rings, bezel cab, ... etc I will pick a bunch of finalists at the end of the month that strike me as creative imaginative, and efficient; but the winner will be by the usual poll vote. The winner will get the slab, and hopefully will proceed to make good on their proposal and come back to show us the finished work. I hope this is fun for all

Okay Daniel, I used Powerpoint and did a cut and paste and made 2 slides. The first is what your original looks like now and the second is the cabs. Some have bee rotated. The cabs And yes, I do have a band saw.

Ed - Great entry. I will try to line these up and add sizes if it gets to the final poll.

KD - anybody who can't play because of software, can print out a color picture, draw the blanks, and send it to me by snail mail. Let me know if you need a higher resolution image to get a good printout.
Otherwise, if some members know of good freeware or sharware image editors, speak up and maybe some folks can get a new skill.

I saw that Edog was using this so I d/l it to try out. Not a bad piece of freeware at all, very nice! IrfanView. Has a lot of tools that can be used, including those needed for this contest. Good luck all, Bill

OK, I moved the entries so far up into a table. Made it a little easier to compare.
Lets get a few more entries!
Cheers

My contribution ! Randy-style ! 18 BEAUTIOUS Pendants. Figured its definitely an option. Earrings, necklaces, freeform cabs, tumbled slabettes. Please dont negate score for my freehanded attempts at the lasso tool LMAO. Whatcha think Randy ? Get out the grinder !

Well, I don't have any equipment to do what I suggest here, but it was fun imagining what I could do if I had the equipment! The breakdown on the slab: The pieces themselves: Most of the images I saw ended up smaller than 1 inch in either width or height (or both).

Gemkoi- I love your first image and it made me think of some famous western lawn art. I'm from Utah and while travelling thru Wyoming I always see the "resting cowboy" yard art statue in peoples' yards, along fencelines, stores, etc. I don't know if you know what the "resting cowboy" looks like, but here it is and it's identical to your first cab. I just crack up everytime I see one in someone's yard!!! Click on the link and you can't miss him. www.shadyshadows.com.futuresite.register.com/I think it's awesome. gaetz

Way to go. Two more entries. And interesting ones too! Competition looks stiff.
I am swamped tomorrow, but will try to get raptor and akansan moved up to the table at the top by Wed night.
Gaetz - that cowboy standing with his back against the tree looks like the street hustlers in the New Orleans French Quarter. Hey maybe stoner's first cab is the same cowbox sitting up on a horse.

Wow Zotika - Master of the graphics software. I like how you let the unused stone fade. And thanks for doing the sizes for me. If you win, I will send an extra bit of stone to thank you for that.
BTW, what software did you use? Did you freehand the heart and other curved shapes, or did you have some sort of graphics template?

Daniel. It is not a big deal. It was my pleasure. I was doing computer graphics for a publishing company. In this case I was using both CorelDraw and Photoshop. That fade effect can be done by Corel DRW as well as Photoshop. I was mainly using Photoshop for first picture and Corel for second one. It was easier to draw shape and measure it by using Corel. Yes, I use photoshop. I can fade a layer, but measuring is a real pain. I end up cutting and creating a new file jsut to see how big the new file will be. Takes time to do 10 or 12 shapes. I have an old copy of Adobe Illustrator around here somewhere, maybe I should dust it off.
