i have about a 4 lb chunk of blue tigers eye that i wanna polish for a display specimen....i want to polish a large side of it where the matrix is in the flat lap...will it look like tigers eye if i do this...or should i just figure a way to stand it up on edge where it dont fall over and polish the edge that you would normally cut...kev.

I don't think you will see the normal layer look or chatoyance if you polish the top matrix off. It would be interesting to try though. If the top comes out plain blue you could polish the edge as well.

The edge is the only place that will show chatoyance.

For best chatoyance, you will want to cut a face at about a 42 degree angle to the fibers. If you just grind off the top, that surface would be perpendicular to the fibers and you would likely get little to no chatoyance

a flat side MIGHT show some chatoyance. that is why most tiger eye has a good dome on it. the dome exposes more of the fiber ends and that is what causes the flash.
