Anybody ever tried these tourmaline gravel sacks from here? capistranomining.com/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=170Kind of sounds like the sapphire gravel bags you can buy from places in Montana and thats a lot of fun. I have been looking for stuff for our rock club to do this winter and thought this might be fun. If anyone has some other ideas for us let me know. The only requrements are that its indoors (way cold out now). And that we can do it in a bar (We have no club house but the Elks club let's us meet there). Thanks

Some friends on another wiki have tried material from this source, and been happy with what they've found. Don't expect to get rich on what comes out of the bags, but you may find a few facet grade pieces. Thanks for reminding me. I have half a bag of sapphire gravel in the garage that needs to be sorted. The guy I got the gravel from even found a tiny diamond in one of his bags. Don

I was just now going to order some from them, but I cancelled it - I don't trust any web site where you have to commit the payment before they show you the shipping charges. Too bad - it might be a fun deal.

Did you mean this?...
"To ship this sack, we split it up into 2 medium flat rate postal boxes. The cost of shipping one sack of material will be $22.00."

At first glance, this site looked really cool until I read the fine print and looked a little deeper. With the tourmaline, there is no gaurantee that you will find anything in your bag of gravel. With the saphires, the bag has been "salted" with 11 karats, or so. Either bag of gravel ($70) will be closer to $100 by the time you ship it. It seems expensive, with no gaurantee.
If you dig a little fartehr on the site, they will sell you a pound of amethyst or citrine for $20/lb. I usually pay about $5/lb for that, so the prices seem high in general.
I would like to try the deal, but would need to hear from someone that has already tried it before I place my order.
Darryl.

drjo - No, not the tourmaline - I wanted to order one of their Montana sapphire "Jewel Jars". Went through the whole process, but nowhere was shipping cost calculated until I got to the last page, where you commit the purchase.

If you want sapphires try here, they are in montana where the sapphires are from. www.sapphiremine.com/html2/products.php our club has ordered from them 2 years in a row now and been real happy with what we found. We got the Eldorado one this year and it was better than last year but it might have been a fluke. We always get the straight out of the ground ones. Salted might get you something for sure but you can also be sure they are not salting with anything particularly good.
