I "rescued" this from the local Olive Garden restaurant's flower bed. I'm confused, never having seen a rock quite like this one. Is it quartz, agate, or common opal? Size is 2.8" X 4.8" and about 1.5" thick. Thanks, Tom

Can't answer the question, but the idea of hunting through restaurants' flower beds is not only intriguing but something I can see myself doing. LOL Neat rock.

Tom, It's massive quartz and is present in both the Eagle Pass decorative gravel and in the stuff from the La Grange quarry too. I've picked up a few pieces myself and some of it has wonderful color and much has that brecciated look to it. The pinks reds, bluish tones, and purples are real nice and it takes a fine polish too.....Mel

COOL! ;D Thanks, Mel - I knew you would know it! Seems like every time I go to O.G. for some of that good shrimp primavera, I take a detour through the rock garden, but this is the first time I've actually dared to confiscate any!
Now, if I am careful and make a couple of "window" cuts to see if it's more stable in any one direction, maybe I'll get some decent cabbing material out of it.
Thanks, Tom

Tom: We have a huge shopping mall here with every square inch of the parking lot raised beds covered with rock from the La Grange, TX quarry. Every time I go there shopping with my wife she has to drag me away from the beds and she won't let me steal a single rock. There's good palm in that stuff too *L*. I forgot to tell you too that some of the stuff similar to what you've pictured seems very microcrystalline so, in that case, it goes more from the massive quartz category to what I'd call flint but still has that brecciated character....Mel

I'd second Mel's id...massive quartzite... Rock gardens are great places to hunt, if you don't mind the funny looks you get from people... The decorative rock garden near where I work is local river rock, I've found agate, jasper, chert, flint, hematite, petrefied wood, epidotic granite, even jade!

I agree with Mel , it is a microcrystalline quartz . if i had to save my life , i would go with chalcedony
