This is an ugly brain shaped rock I found in an area that has a lot of coral fossils. I almost left it behind. But it spoke to me and asked me to take it home. I could see some tinyagate fortifcati0ns on the outside which is why I ended up taking it home. I cut a slice off the end. It was to say the least - nothing. Then I cut another slice. A tiny drusy appeared but still uninteresting brown color for the most part. Then I decided to cut one more slice. After that, through a slightly larger drusy, I could see a dark hole in the stone. That made me cut another slice to see what was inside. I almost fell over when I opened the top on the saw after that.  in my hand for size comparison. By the outside, I am guessing that it was once a coral head that has turned geode. My very first geode that I have found myself. Almost pure white inside and full of crystals. I am soooo happy. ;D Amy

Hand Polish it!! Basically use a flat pane of glass with tumbling grit and water. Put down a little grit (1/4 teaspoon) a couple squirts of water and start rubbing! After about 15 mins of steady rubbing add a little more grit. Keep working each stage till your happy. I use Alum. Oxide for a polish (same method just use a little less polish). Hints: If the rock starts to grab real bad just give the slurry a squirt of water. If you get tired take a break. Just leave eveything as it is. To restart just a little water will loosen things up. Wash everything REAL good between stages. If possible I like a window pane still in the frame- gives me a nice work top, and I can just move around the pane for the different stages. Have fun!

What a great find!
You're listed in AZ so am guessing that is where you found it.
I gotta ask, when are you heading back? If I cut that thing, I'd be thinking, hmm, tomorrow!
Keep us updated on what else you find out there!

Very nice find. It's fun to see something not so attractive expose it's inner beauty.

Thanks Stefan, I will try that.
elementary, LOL, you read my mind. I found this one in November, just didn't cut it until this past Tuesday. I did go back to that spot on Wednesday. Picked up a few rocks, but I don't think so. At least not the ones I cut already. I think I will go again and roam a little further next time. Who knows?

Sweet find! - Little more than a geode, that appears to be an agate that formed around crystals. Notice on your cut face the hole. To me that looks like a negative crystal cast. Basically a crystal would have been in place (most common is calcite, or barite), that agate would have then formed around it, and over time something happened and the crystal structure rotted away. I have several Thundereggs I've collected over the years that have this feature. Pretty interesting in geological terms.

Actually the hole was filled with a soft grainy ugly stuff probably calcite. I chipped it out because it was ugly. Kinda reminded me of tarter on teeth.
