I am now managing Steve's old flat rate travelling rock box.
This box travelled throughout the U.S. and came to me in Canada.
It spread much happiness throughout the RTH world and now it is in it's second incarnation and spreading rocky goodness once again.
In case you are new or have been living in a druze cave for over a year, I will explain what this is all about in the fine print below...
Steveholmes originally had this idea to use a USPS flat rate box to assemble & send a collection of rocks out into the world to visit various RTH members so they could oggle them, learn a few things & add/swap rocks before sending it off to someone else for a relatively reasonable cost of postage.
Ever since then, this box and now a couple of others have made their way out into the RTH world with reasonably good success.
This is the second incarnation of Steve's original box.
It is without a doubt, the best of all the travelling rock boxes because it is charged with good karma vibes... just checking to see if you're still reading this.
If you would like to participate, all you have to do is post to this topic with your intent to become a recipient. The first recipient list is now closed but the recipient list for the second round still has lots of room before it's full (20 names or when the first list is exhausted).
Since the box takes awhile to get to everyone on a large list I suppose it's only fair that people who signed up sooner should be able to get it sooner. If I did a random draw of names from an ever growing list it is possible that someone who signed up early on will be waiting behind people who signed up way later, which would suck.
I made a few changes & additions to the new rock box...
One is to have a resident log book. This concept is taken from my geocaching hobby where you must make a log book entry when you find a cache and state what you took & left as trades. You are also encouraged to make some comments or share a brief story about your experience with the box for others to enjoy reading about while they have it.
Instead of limitting the box to JUST rocks I will allow for some space to be used for "other" supplies related to rocks, like maybe dop wax, bell caps, small tools/jigs/templates, replacement tumbler belts or bushings etc... I'll provide a Lock&Lock box for the more fragile items to go in so they are not crushed by the rocks.
Another neat concept I borrowed from geocaching is to allow small "hitchikers" to be placed in the box. Hitchikers are items adressed specifically to someone still pending on the recipient list. You can tell them in advance or make it a total surprise! It can be rough rock, a finished cab, or any certain something you know someone else will like. The only rules with regards to this are to respect the fact that the item is intended for the named individual and to try to keep the size of hitchikers down to a minimum so as not to displace the "free-trade" item space.
I included a donation envelope for "additional shipping charges". It would be greatly appreciated by our Canadian members if each person to recieve the box in the U.S. could leave a buck to help supplement the extra cost of shipping the box to/in/out of Canada. It costs anywhere from $18-30 to ship that much size/weight without a flat rate service. Anyone subject to the higher shipping costs is allowed to use the funds to suplement the cost of shipping ABOVE AND BEYOND the cost of flat rate service. By registering to recieve the box you must agree to all associated costs of getting it to the next recipient in a timely fashion.
You will only have to disclose your mailing address and a contact phone number to the person sending you the box and affix your return address & contact # for the person you are sending it to.
You should send the box to the next recipient within ten business days of recieving it, provided that contact can be made with the next recipient within that time. If you are late sending it out, you must accept multiple tougue lashings from pending recipients until you get your butt in gear.
When the box goes out, the next person on the list should be notified right away to give them time to prepare. If the next recipient does not reply within five days of being notified then the box will skip over them to the next name on the list. If your name comes up and you missed it for whatever reason you will only get bumped back onto the list you signed up on so you still have an equal chance of getting the box until all the names on lthe list are exhausted, in which case you're SOL unless you sign up for the next round.
I think it's fair to say that your turn could come up at a "bad time" for you and if this should happen then you can delegate your turn without undue penalty.
Basically, I want this to be a fun thing for everyone.
The rules are there to keep things moving smoothly so everyone's happy!
Note:
Please mention in your reply, what (country if applicable) state & city you reside in. The box can also go to Mexico & Canada which will be separate lists if there is enough interest.
So...
Without further adue...
Here is the recipient list for the first round of the box!
