I picked up a 6 pound gob of quartz off the side of the road the last time I went to East Central Alabama. One side of it was really dirty, so I washed and scrubbed and super iron out-ed, and finally realized once the dirt was gone that the green stuff wasn't actually moss or algae (don't think). The color is a really nice sage green with black flecks here and there. Any ideas? Thanks! Kate Attachments:

Pretty sure it's epidote, I have literally hundreds of rocks, lots of quartz mainly, that's covered in it. Then I have some very mature epidote that is just gorgeous. Example, here's a beautiful spear of smoky quartz that's just coated in epidote on three sides.

Around Carrollton GA, a rock that looks almost the same is quartz with green actinolite crystals. Sometimes there will be only a few and sometimes very massive. Makes excellent cabs. I have a stereo microscope and I like admiring the actinolite crystals. So it might be actinolite rather than epidote. But either way, it will make some beautiful and unique cabs. Probally would tumble too.

Chromenut, that is a beautiful quartz crystal you posted! Thanks for the lead!
And Frank, I got this about 30 miles from Carrollton, in the Pinetucky region of Alabama. Have you ever gone to any of those mine sites around Pinetucky?

I would go with actinolite or possibly some sort of serpentinite....

Ms Kate, I have collected around Pinetucky. I was looking for beryl and tourmaline but only found tourmaline and mica. I was collecting on the old mine dumps around Micaville, Al. The main dump area is now being mined for it mica. The company is grinding up all the rock material and grinding it up. They are using a type of float process to recover the mica. I tried to get permission to collect on a Saturaday but was not allowed. Some great beryl has been ground to powder. Still Digging in the Georgia Dirt, Frankie
