Got back from a fairly unproductive prospecting trip late last night. It rained almost the whole time and the river was at full flood stage. After almost 1200 highway miles, a closed ferry due to flood and logs in the river with a 6 hour detour, 500 miles of super rough, muddy, snowy 4X4 trails all the gold i have to show for it is three little flakes. I made the best of the rain and high water by changing plans and mostly scouting new areas and walking the roadsides and rockslides looking for neat rocks. One nice thing about the rain is that it shows the colors and character of the rocks as well as washing the dust off to help show the telltale glow of freshly exposed agate.
I was able to pick up almost a full grocery bag of nice rocks consisting of 2 pieces of pet wood, a dozen or so nice jaspery, flinty, cherty pieces and about 100 pieces of agatey, quartzy pieces. I was amazed at the huge variety found and even though it wasn't my main goal for this trip it was enjoyable none the less.
First pics are dry, pretty much as i found them save a little holding them upside down in the rain for a couple minutes to clean the mud they were sitting in.
First are the agatey pieces i like in one batch.
second are the pieces that didn't look too good so i left them in the bag.
Next are the Jaspery, Flinty, Cherty looking pieces in one batch. I'm not geo learned enough to specifically ID them, any guesses?
Here are the two pieces of pet wood dry.
And each piece of wood seperate and wet.
I don't know what i would ID these pieces as but i sure like the colors in some of them. Jasper, flint, chert?
I'll continue with the pics of the agates in the next post.
