Been a while since I posted. Relocated from the east coast (West Virginia) eo the mid-west. Collecting pet wood and need something to do with it Local has a Lortone Lapidary Polishing Arbor Model GCD-1C What is a good price and what will it do? I am looking to make "bulky" rings. Will this apparatus help me in that endeavor? Thanks....

Let me rephrase...
If I was wanting to make large rings, would it be best to shape with a saw and then vibe, or shape with a arbor?

What are you making the rings out of?

I'm not sure I understand what you are desirous of doing either. Can you be a bit more specific?

If you're talking about shaping stone you might want to post this in the cabbing section

Thanks for the response...
OK, What I have is.......
Stones:
Chert Petrified Wood Fossil Coral
Size: 1" to 4"
I have a saw to 'shape' with.
Wanting to make rings of asymmetrical shapes with the stone size dimensions being 1" max..1/2" min.
I have a three pound tumbler but think a vibe may be best. Do you guys think shaping with a saw and then vibe is cool ? Or would an Arbor be better?
Thanks so much.

If you can make the stones the shape you want on the saw, the vibe will be much faster.
If you want more smoothing, the rotary is the way to go

I don't know if this will be any help but I cut these pieces out of Chinchilla pet wood on my 8" trim saw and put them in my Lot-O-Tumbler ( a vibe unit) as is. I used 220,500,1000 grits,Tripoli pre-polish and Rapid Polish #61 to do them. connrock

nice pet wood. i am slowly getting to that point in my experience with rocks. we have lots of pet wood in gravel here in eastern nebraska and i got about ten pieces between two and three inches from new gravel around a new store here. i really like your pictures of what you can do with those pieces. myself, i need to find a way now to grind the rocks after i cut the shapes. i had been grinding them on my 6" 100 grit wheel but i was advised to keep water on it instead of using it dry and i haven't come up with a solution for that yet. thanks for the inspiration of shapes in your rocks. charlie

Yes connrock, thhat is very helpful. Seems that you are doing exactly what I was thinking of. Mine will probably be only flat on one side to mount.
Now just kinda buy a Lot-O vibe (from rock shed) and find a source for ring hardware. Any ideas?
