Drove to Zapata 6-10. Got there early and it was about 78F. It got up to 96F by 2pm. Not too bad. Not like George West yesterday when it was 109F at 2pm. I picked up some jasper and agates but mostly performed some surveillance and made plans for another trip later. I picked up this brecciated jasper agate which I cut a few chunks off of. You can see how coarse my blades are. It's like cutting with diamond cat's claws. Some of that dark green jasper that sometimes has red speckles: Jaspers: This one has a vein of agate running through it.: I found logs of this crazy looking wood that was covered with fine crystals. I wasn't sure if it was wood but I brought a piece home and now I think it might be. I'll have to cut it.: I'd found mica on the ranch before but someone had run a blade across the site. The only sign I could find: This place is dry dry: Two good reasons to watch your step around here: You can see the history of the flood times and dry times in the walls of the gullies around here: Dad's I hope you enjoyed your "King for a Day" day. I know I enjoyed mine.

Nice finds, Carlos! That Zapata / Falcon lake area is just loaded with agates. A bit hot for me though! You ever get a chance to check out Bob's Nob?

I haven't been to Bob's Nob before, not sure if I care for the name, but I think I've found it on Google Earth and I'll be looking next time I go down there.

Love your trip reports Carlos! Boy it really looks like there's a huge amount of gravel on that ranch. No wonder the hunting is so good. That green jasper is very cool stuff.....Mel

I haven't been to Bob's Nob before, not sure if I care for the name, but I think I've found it on Google Earth and I'll be looking next time I go down there. Bob's Nob is listed in a lot of the old guide books. I was first made aware of the location because of Matt Dillon's pictures of the fantastic agate that he found at the fish camp there. If you DON'T turn right but keep past the road leading down to the fish camp you will end up at Bob's Nob. At fist you see where the dug for gravel and if you keep going on towards the cliffs of Falcon Lake you will see a huge pile of gravel where they must have had a classifier to remove the caliche from the gravel. There are no posted signs here and I spent some time looking around here. I went just a few months before the killing there on the skidoo that got so much publicity. It was like 106 with a hot wind that made a real spooky sound. I wouldnt make a 1300 mile trip one way like I did for it, but if you are local I would definitely check it out.

You did a great job of taking us down there. Great jaspers really like that dark green with red spots. Is it Bloodstone?

The eggs: I saw a small pigeon size raptor fly off when I was about 20' from the eggs. Sorta like KillDeer eggs but more mottled than speckled. The green jasper: It's green jasper with red, yellow or maroon jasper spots and inclusions. It is a nice hard jasper that takes a great polish, just have to watch for pits. I looked up bloodstone just now and the definition calls for green chalcedony with red jasper spots. Thanks for the tips on how to get to the Nob. Hopefully I'll be hob-nobbing with Bob this summer.

Thanks for taking the time to post the photos and take us along ("virtually"). The jasper is really pretty. Congrats on the successful dig! Paul
