Looks like it is possible we will get hit along the east coast later this week.
Inquiring minds want to know: Are there that few names starting with I? There was a hurricane Irene in the not so distant past. aren't they suppossed to have some originality?

There are 6 lists of names used for Atlantic tropical storm systems. Therefore, the same name will come up again every 6 years. Names are only retired if they are killer storms with long-term financial significance. Katrina is retired because its impact is longer than six years. Bill repeats because even though it crushed my house (and a few others) in 2003, in 6 years it is all cleaned up and would not continue to appear on financial documents, therefore, we saw a Bill again in 2009.
The purpose of the names is not to be "original." It is because during a disaster, if you are sending out flights of hurricane hunters, it is proven the pilots etc. understand faster if you use a short name instead of a long number, to designate the storm. For insurance documents and other documents, a name doesn't have to be original unless the damage of the storm is long-lasting such that using the name again only six years later would create confusing documents.
It's actually a good system. Although we are projected to run out of names this year, as we did in the record-breaking year of 2005, and if this keeps happening in the 21st century, we may need to consider creating longer lists.
