We just had an Earthquake on the east Coast for a change.
I'm on the 30th floor of the Hancock Tower in Boston and it was pretty eerie, lasted 3 or 4 seconds and everyone was pretty shook up.
The quake actually hit around Richmond Va but it could be felt for some ditances.

They can be scary. Do you know if any of the buildings have been constructed to any seismic standards? Bob

D C felt it too. Too bad Congress wasn't in session. They could use a good shaking.

Was in an earthquake in Yellowstone in June 1975 and was eating some "mater samiches". Saw the ground wave and the wife seen our truck wave with the ground also. Just before the ground waved, I accused her of kicking the picnic table. Almost got in trouble for that !! We heard a large loud rumbling and later found out that Obsidian Cliff had collasped across the road and made it impassable in both directions. The earthquake was a 4.5. Got to Old Faithful and saw the chart readings. There was trembling all that day but the 4.5 was the biggest. One travel trailer had minor damage. It was exciting after the quake to realize we had been in one. Pretty cool for a rock collector living in Georgia

Its the strongest one I've ever felt in PA. I work on the second floor of an office building and it was moving at least an inch or two. It damaged a concrete bridge in the city we live and the bridge is now closed.

We're currently on Hatteras Island off the coast of NC, not too far from the epicenter, but, since it's a barrier island, didn't feel it. Jo

I was on the phone with Dell tech support when my house started to shake and the chandelier swayed from side to side. Now I live in a old house (circa 1896) and it is prone to settling from time to time but this was different. It is amazing that I felt it all the way in NJ. Stu

Twitter chatter . . .
- S&P downgraded it to a 2.0
- Rick Perry denied it
- Obama wanted a 3.4, but the Republicans wanted 5.9, so he compromised.

The shaking lasted about 30-40 seconds here. was gentle for about 20 seconds then got much harder for a few and then tapered off. Once everything stopped shaking and we saw it was settling, I ordered everyone out to our safe area for evacuations and waited for the building to be inspected for water leaks, electrical problems, cracks, etc....but the maintenance didn't show up. Finally got a hold of Building management and they said they didn't have anyone qualified and they didn't tell us to evacuate. I am going to have some choice words for them tomorrow! Many people went home as soon as they heard the Govt offices were being told to go home (water leaks in electrical areas). That cloggs all the roadways and you can't get a cell phone call at all! I just talked to a lady and she took 2 1/2 hours to get home. Normally takes her 45 minutes. It just turns everyone crazy on the road too! I think we are about 75 miles from the center and I am pretty sure there is only 5 of us left in the office now. Fran

Snuffy... We're heading out Thurs unless it veers way east or pitters out (slim chance of that). Expect a mass exodus on Friday so we're going early. Mandatory on Sat (locals). To tell you the truth though, we're the only ones camping in our section of the CG, so many incoming visitors cancelled their reservations or got the heck out of Dodge.
My dad was a fisherman and had a house down here with several of his fishing buddies so I've been coming down here since I was 10 yrs old. Evacuated twice.

Jo,my daughter called me this morning wondering what to do.I told her to watch all the news there and make her decision. But she thinks I'm the best weatherman! They just issued a mandatory evacuation for Ocracoke (small island south of this one) for tomorrow morning. They said they won't know for sure if it's gonna hit here until Thursday. Tell her to make her decision tomorrow after watching WAVY and the Weather Channel (or use a NOAH radio), and then head west accordingly. The earlier the better... You don't wanna get caught in evacuation traffic.
