This is a little off topic for the tumbling board, but wanted to share it with my "friends" here on the board. My brother and I have been working on a book for several years, and actually have been doing research on this particular area for over 10 years. My brother finally made his last entry and sent a copy of the book to a professor at Utah State University. The professor was very interested in what we had, and I believe he was amazed at the amount of work, research, exploring, interviewing, and pictures we've compiled. Well, hopefully the professor thinks it will be good enough to publish. Here's the front cover.... kind of a blurry pic, but an idea of what it is. I'm very excited about this endeavor, and it's been tremendously fun and exciting being able to spend so much time with my brother in the field, at libraries, and meeting people and learning more stuff than we had ever known about. If it ever get's published, I'll let everyone know. Thanks. Steve

Wow, I bet you have a lot of time invested in that. I bet you did on site research also. Probably picked up rocks while you were there also! Congrat's on your achievement and I hope you find a publisher soon.

Steve, Sounds like you two have done a ton of work on this and have a nice body of work there. I'm really curious why you sent it to a University professor rather than a publisher. Normally professors have little or nothing to do with publishing, apart from getting their own papers published in established and prestigious journals. Do you know this fellow to be involved in publishing? Can he open doors to some funding agencies that might be willing to sponsor publication (in which case, I assume he would want his name on the work also). Just from the title of your work, I would guess that there are regional and local government historical or geological departments that might have grants to support research and publishing. Sorry for all the questions, maybe you've already tapped those avenues or maybe the university actively supports or produces publications?
Don't know if this is of interest to you or not, but a bit over 10 years ago, a bunch of professors at the University of Alberta got together to write/publish a book called Edmonton Beneath Our Feet, a softcover book on our local geology and its history and interpretation. They appear to have set up the Edmonton Geological Society, and published the book through that society (which I assume means it was self-published). But they didn't fund the publication through their own funds or university funds, they got sponsored by 59 different agencies, government departments, companies, and individuals. Their acknowledgements list sponsors who gave $1,000 to $10,000 (7 of them), $250 to $1,000 (12 of them), and $100 to $250 (40 donors). The 7 sponsors with the deepest pockets include agencies like Economic Development Edmonton, Edmonton Community Foundation, Alberta Research Council, Canadian Geological Foundation, and so forth. The group of 12 second-biggest sponsors were mainly large local companies and consulting firms with a geology orientation.
Anyway, I don't know if you've thought of those kind of funding opportunites, but if you haven't, then keep them in your mind if you run into stumbling blocks elsewhere. Sounds like a great piece of work, it should definitely be published.

You can always self-publish if a traditional publisher doesn't pick it up.

Man that is too cool. Even if you don't get it published, I would love to get a copy of it. Way to go Steve, I'm very impressed.

Very cool project Steve! You must have put many hours of hard work into that project. I sometimes buy books from the US Government Documents Agency that are very similar. That coud be another avenue to explore for publication purposes.....mel

WTG Steve and to your brother also. I sure hope you are able to get it published, then you'll have to have a book signing for the RTH members. ;D

Good for you Steve, I am always impressed by people who actually put books together rather than just talking about doing it someday. (like me!) Congrats!
