I'm in a similar situation....but then again, I'm brand new to tumbling (cabbing for 1 year).
I just got a Lortone 33B from Rockshed. I am tumbling all my cabbing leftovers and trim as well as a bunch of stuff I "inherited" from a couple of sources. My goal was to tumble them in coarse and finish in my vibe. I'm doing the unthinkable and tumbling things of different hardnesses. I sort after each week before I recharge. The foam isn't causing any problems...it is not overflowing or building up pressure or holding grit. By the end of a week, my grit is ground.
So, I'm not much help to you, but I'll be interested to see what those more experienced say....

I would ignore the foam and check the barrel only if it bulges.

I had this problem when a piece of pyrite was in barrel, foam and gas build up (enough to pop lid when away for weekend) removed pyrite problem solved.

lol. I got the foam too from some rocks we picked by the river. It looked exactly like you said Geoff. A big yummy rootbeer float..hmmmm....beer. I just cleaned up the lid and put it back on. I'll let you know what happens. I'm just going to check it everyday to let the air out just in case it needs it. Just think of it as a adventure! I am.

I get foam and it used to bother me as it seemed to retard the grinding action...but that may just be a figment of my imagination. Rocks would seem to break up the foam as they travel around the barrel

The can that I had filled with river rocks that foamed up like the one above was due to get recharged today. Opened it up and found that the foam had little effect on the stones. They were all round and unpitted but two. I moved them on to the next step. I don't think it's anything to worry about.
