Just got a box-o-rocks from my hubby's aunt ... this was inside - have no clue what it is...looks like some kind of plant life? Thank you for looking

Judy, that is an aewsome piece! What's your plan for it? IMO, to nice to cut up for cabbing but, would make a spectacular cab

A super piece of Sagenite. Looks like some kind of fungi growing inside a rock though Sagenite isn't actually a fossil. Bob

Wow! Thanks for the quick response!! Not sure what we're gonna do with it just yet...it's already semi-polished but pitted where the fossil parts are... here's a couple dry photos, shows the pitting: Could possibly create (2) long free form cabs from it if there's way to do that without harming those parts... I dunno - I'm afraid to damage it, but it would make killer cabs

Yup, sagenite in agate. Usually acicular crystal sprays of calcite, aragonite, goethite etc which are softer than agate unless fully replaced by silica and so they undercut leaving the pits.....Mel

I agree with Bob that Sagenite is NOT a fossil. If I'm wrong, please let me know (and tell me what fossil it is) because I've been telling folks otherwise for years.
A beautiful specimen...I would be tempted to face polish it or if it's too undercut, hmm. Maybe a clear doublet on top?

Peach: you are 100% correct. Sagenite is a crystalline structure, not a fossil. When the original crystals are fully replaced by agate it would be a pseudomorph but not a replacement of an organic structure like a plant fossil.....Mel
