Heard a guy on the radio talking about this...
Regarding Alawaky (or however you spell his name)
He was a terrorist scumbag that needed to die, but he was also an American citizen who hadn't been tried on any charges.
If the POTUS can take him out without a by your leave, what's to stop him from doing so to other American citizens that he deems a danger - outside this country or in?

Yeah, Ron Paul made that same point in a TV interview. After all, Democrats have been calling Tea Party folks terrorists. Slippery slope in some ways. I suppose a rogue administration could target the opposition. Far out, but worse case scenario could see drones sending rockets into tea Party rallies. I guess speculation says if you could suspend the rights of a citizen ( as some of the new national security rules do) it's not a big step to target folks with opposing views. This administration does have some odd ideas and, for a constitutional lawyer, this president does not have a lot of respect for the constitution.....Mel

Rick Perry calls for Department of Homeland Security to start using drones to monitor the Texas-Mexico border, unaware that this has been happening for six years under two presidents. ;D www.politico.com/news/stories/0811/61476.html

Obama did the right thing. We as Americans deserve to celebrate. Don't snatch defeat from the jaws of victory just because of some idiot on talk radio. You know the reason Obama doesn't have to drop a drone on a poker player in Texas? Because the Dallas police will pick him up!!! We have rule of law in America. However, there are countries where there is no rule of law. Are we to let murderers walk free because they have fled to those countries? Some lowlife piece of trash can get a "kill Americans free" card simply by relocating to Pakistan or Somalia or Yemen?
No. We have to send a message that these killers WILL be dealt with, and if they are rich enough to buy gov'ts, they will STILL be dealt with. And if some dude on talk radio doesn't like it, who cares. I have a firm rule of thumb, if I have the radio on, and someone starts talking, I change the channel. Try it, you'll live longer.
Also think about this, as a constitutional LAWYER, he knows all the loopholes. The American constitution don't apply in Pakistan, Somalia, or Yemen. Too bad, so sad for you pirates and terrorists. I think it's pretty cool that Obama has the stones to do this, to be honest. I think he's right to do it, but I also think it's one of those common sense things that most presidents won't do because it looks bad in the history books.

Hmm. Think the Politico story is only part correct. The Texas based border drone started flying the part Perry is talking about after I moved here, late summer 2010. Until then they had only three drones that were I think on the California, Az, NM borders and were not based out of Texas. I thought the Texas based drone was at Perry's request as the government would not supply more troops for the border, at least at that time. Perry has been trying to beef up border security for years and the government has been dragging their heels for years. At least that was the story I read. I think in the instance you're referring to Perry is requesting more drones to replace the lack of additional land security troops. I think he knows there was one working as it's been all over the papers.....Mel
I think constitutional protections apply to American citizens anywhere but agree terrorists deserve to be hunted and killed anywhere. If citizens, they are committing treason which earns the death penalty anyway.

I'm just playing devil's advocate here. Treason should be the death penalty, but the constitution says that an American citizen gets a trial. He didn't even get one in absentia. Slippery slope indeed...

I guess he shouldn't have blown off his warrant... :cheesy: I see it is that he knew he was wanted "dead or alive", by his actions he chose death. I do agree it is a slippery slope, but do feel he got what was coming to him. However, if G.W. would have done this the left would have come unglued...

Toad, I'm definitely with you on this one. Samir Khan, also a US citizen, was also killed in the attack and as a propaganda writer was guilty of nothing, except perhaps bad journalism. Al Awlaki was merely a figurehead who was given his position because he was from the US.
If Obama personally signed off on this one I agree with Ron Paul that it is grounds for impeachment

I have no problem with our Government killing people such as Alawaky (or however you spell his name). He would kill any one of us, in cold blood, hot blood, torture us, kill our children, pluck out your eyes, etc. He did not hide that fact. He killed indiscriminately in the past and was sworn to continue executing any one who he did not like. The fact that he is American just makes his offense worse IMHO
The world evolves, civilization changes over the years. Our defense and our laws are designed to work against a world that existed in the past, not the sort of enemies we see today. We need to have sets of laws that treat different classes of offenders in different ways. I do not want a Government that can torture me without reason, which is what I believe the Bush administration did by legalizing torture and the reason Jake now fears that ruling because Obama is in power. I have no problem torturing those who torture us. I have a big problem with extending that to allow torture of everyday citizens and criminals alike.
Even though he was an American citizen, is it right to treat people like Timothy McVeigh like other criminal offenders. Is killing the same when you kill one person or commit mass murder? Should we allow each family member who lost a loved one in the Oklahoma City massacre a chance to give some personal retribution to that class of killer?

Fear ? Me ? I don't fear Obama as a person. If he wants to take this 70 yr old on man to man, I say bring it on. But he doesn't have the guts for that. The only thing I fear about Obama is what he's doing to this country in the eyes of the rest of the world. With all of his bowing and ass kissing to other world leaders, he has made all of us look weak. The sooner he's out of office, the better it will be for us as a country.

A quick execution isn't torture. And a propaganda writer is a recruiter for killers. If the writer of hate journalism didn't want to go down in flames with a bomb designer, I have an idea for him. Don't hang out with guys who design bombs. Don't go all the way to Yemen to hang out with bad guys and then pretend you're just an innocent caught in the crossfire.

Yup. Just like the old timey cowboys said, " You rides with horse thieves, you hangs with horse thieves." You spend your time with killers, you take the chance you'll go down with them.....Mel
