Ever have one of those days where you wake up in the morning and something just doesn't feel right?
My son has been having some car problems, he broke down on the freeway and we had his car towed home. Our neighbor has a trailer and was going to let us borrow it this weekend so that we could take the car in.
In the meantime, Devin borrowed my van to drive Justin and him to school. Devin does Running Start so goes to High School for 1st and 2nd period, then later goes to Bellevue College for the rest of the day. He got home at 10:15 this morning, walks in the door and said "Mom, where's my car?"
COULDN'T BELIEVE IT!!!! Somebody stole his car!!! The police just left our house a little while ago.... I'm floored. What's weird is that the car was an old 92 Taurus, nothing special about it at all. The police think that is was stolen for a joy ride and are pretty confident that it will turn up abandoned somewhere.
I will never understand why some people do these kinds of things? :nono:

Sorry about your troubles.

Haha! No kidding ;D! Devin's actually been saving up his money from his job to get a new car. We got a quote from the recycling center that if we removed the fluids and the battery they would give us $300 - $400 to recylce it. The tires are still really good and we figured we would put them on Craigslist. Guess someone really likes joy riding in junk cars or... they beat us to scrapping it. Bummer though, Devin really needed a few more months out of it to finish saving up money. If it isn't recovered though, we'll step in and help him out It really could have been much worse... at least they didn't take the Caravan or the Durango that were outside as well. Those two vehicles are the only ones we can use to take family trips because they hold 7 passengers, phew!! (Oh... and in the back of my Caravan is all the buckets of my rockhounding tools and on the back window is my totally awesome RTH bumper sticker.... now that would have ticked me off!!!!!!! )

Unfortunately, it's becoming a big business to steal older cars for their parts. Replacing door panels, hoods or quarter panels on older common cars is expensive so there is a good market for cars stolen to be stripped for their parts. 1999 Taurus is on the top ten stolen for parts list. Don't know about the 92. Hopefully it will turn up to just be a joy ride and not a trip to a chop shop.....Mel

Sorry to hear of the theft Krystee. It's maybe not a shiny new Taurus, but it's still "his car".I'd be furious!
Didn't you say it was broke down & you towed it home? How could they get it away from the house?

What Mel said. There was no joy ride, this is a business.
The weird thing about the 89-91 era Taurus is that they used to break down every 1 of three trips even in the early 1990s. I used to joke that my (business) partner's Taurus got towed more often than it got drove. Brings back some memories...but when a kid is trying to get a start and first the car breaks down/has to be towed and THEN somebody steals it...I'm thinking it was a pro with a tow truck that stole it to be chopped. I don't believe the "joy ride" theory. I believe the cops are not interested in investigating the theft of a $400 car and they are just giving you some sound bytes. The car got towed to your house. Someone towed it elsewhere, they didn't "joy ride" it elsewhere for it wasn't drive-able. It's a professional crime/chop shop.
I can't say much more in a public forum but I'll say this. It's a $400 car. It got "mysteriously" towed. Don't risk your future or your son's future by looking into it more closely. It just ain't worth it.
They do this for money. A lot of cars, a lot of cocaine, a lot of money. Tread carefully. You would not be messing with some teen kids joyriding if you poked too hard at this. You would be messing with violent professional criminals who do a volume business. Nobody makes money stealing $400 piece of metal. But if you steal five $400 pieces of metal every day...aha...it starts to add up. And the police know this, yet they feed you a silly story when you know the car is not "joy ride-able." That should tell you right there where they're coming from.

Yeah Nate, it does NOT do the freeway. While he was doing 60 the rod went and he lost power, dropped to 40 in a second or so with knocking that was louder than his stereo . When he called me broke down on the shoulder of the fast lane I could hear his voice shaking. I was scared too! Told him to call 911 and keep his seat belt on. The police department sent out a tow truck and he made it safely home. After the tow left we tried driving it and the clunk clunk noise was deafening. Patrick tried driving it around the block and it jerked back and forth the whole time kinda like someone was running into his back bumper every few seconds. After leaving it sit for a day we tried it again, this time it made it a block or two before the clunking started and it didn't jerk because we turned around and parked it back at the house. I have no flippin clue how these people (or person) got it away from here! I thought for sure we would find it within a mile, but me, Patrick and my Father all got in our vehicles and drove all around the neighborhood. We didn't find it . Mel, hopefully 92 is waaay to old for a chop shop. That would really stink. The police officer seemed pretty confident that it was just taken as a joy ride.

Peach,
Dang it, we were posting at the same time I guess. Your' post gave me chills. Do you think the tow company that brought it from the freeway was the inside guy? I paid him $300.00 (with a tip), that would just make me sick if I paid him money and then he totally screwed us over. Hope not....

I'm sorry to hear what happened, Krystee. That's really aggravating. Particularly stealing from kids who are just getting started. Pisses me off. Years ago, someone did a "smash and grab", breaking the passenger side window on my wife's minivan and taking Andrew's portable DVD player from the back seat. The van was parked in our driveway at the time and the guy must've moved really quickly. Andrew was only four at the time and had a hard time understanding that someone would do that. He kept asking if "the policeman was still looking for the man who took his DVD player". I'm glad no one was hurt, especially when the car broke down on the freeway. That part could have been bad. Hope the insurance helps out.

I hate to hear what you have been going through Krystee! I would have to agree that it was towed away. Not sure why but hopefully, you can get another car soon for your son. It is a real bummer though! I hate stealing!!!! Fran

bummer and dagnabit. kinda sound like the tow driver was interested. and just thought you were probably just going to send it to a crusher to get you tow money back and he took it.
