I went for a spirited ride on the motorcycle with a buddy through the Kettle Moraine area sunday. Along the way I spotted a few areas that may be good for pickin' rocks. They looked like giant gravel piles that were overgrown and forgotten. I decided to run back down there this afternoon after work and see if I could find anything worth bringing home. I did find a few pieces in the short time I had to look, but I think planning a whole day to pick around would be a better idea. Here's what I got: Sedementary something or another 2 corals the other quartz, chert, granite, etc Close up of the chip I knocked off Here's what I was able to cut so far. I am guessing on a few ID's sedementary coral chert Another crumbly chert? limestone? another lil limestone? granite? no flash I cut 2 of the dark ones with the veins, they were just hornfels (black) with quartz, so I didn't photograph them. Thanks for looking again, Nate

No kidding Geoff, Neenah!?! I'm only a few miles NW of there. If you're ever gonna be in the area again, let me know.
Hey Froggy, I plan to slab these babies, but I'm wanting to get my saw built. I think I have to at least cut an end off a few to get a better look inside. My daughter Emily claimed the 2nd coral piece I posted, so it's off limits lol. The rest are fair game!

My favorite is the sedimentary. Funny how it's brown on the outside & so different on the inside! Like Diane says, looks just like the water in my backyard does when a cold front comes through! Larger waves up front with smaller waves receding into the background meeting up with the cloudy sky! I want some!!!! I could have some fun with that!!

There lots to comment on and so many pix my slow speed is having trouble but the coral is sweet and what I call amythized !
why do you think the one is sedimentary? great waves stripes !
I pick up lots of rocks with that brown rind and am surprised at the white inside not expecting that
anyway it a geologically active gravel bed! were the river rocks dug from another area and landscaped there?

Thanks Paul. Ed, This is a moraine area, the debris was dumped there by a glacier. It looks like a huge gravel pile. I think it may have been dug in at one time for whatever reason, but is just getting grown over now except where it's eroding. I'll probably drive there next time I go, and make a day of it. It's a beautiful area, so it will be a day well spent. Here's a link to a pic of where I was collecting.
