Both. Most dishes, glasses, silverware gets loaded into the dishwasher over several days. Pots, pans, utensils usually get hand washed

i put everything in the dishwasher all the time. the only time i handwash anything is if it's dirty and i need to use it. we use a lot of paper plates, plastic utensils and paper towels as well. our carbon footprint is massive.

Until I got into cabbing, I washed everything by hand and saw it as a Zen thing. I stripped out the old in-op dishwasher & turned it into our recycling bin.
Now? The NEW Dishwasher! My hands get too messed up from cabbing to further dry them out with dishwater, especially during the winter.
Dawn dishsoap, while perfect for cleaning oily rocks, is just horrible for my hands.
I would rather be cabbing, not washing dishes.
I have my priorities.

Thanks! for all the responses . We do ours by hand ,have for ten years , after having several dishwashing machines that really did`nt clean . We do use paper plates when the meal is dry, like hamburgers, etc . we dont use plastic bowls or plastic spoons and forks. The reason i ask is i have a idea for a invention .

the main reason I don't use one is that first I don't have one and secondly they are a bit more expensive to run for just two people's worth of dishes. they are energy and water wasters no matter how efficient they make them you still need to pre rinse crud off of what goes into them so my reasoning if you got to do that your half way done with hand washing.

I hear ya Sands. My back screams every time I wash dishes. Strange though, my back doesn't seem to mind standing in front of the slab saw all day.

This is an interesting thread....
I do both, all plastic gets washed by hand as well as pots and pans. Most everything else goes in the dishwasher.
I also use paper plates/cups constantly! With four kids and my parents living with us, we would have to run the dishwasher three times a day if we didn't!

Here's another perpective to look at - As Stu said about his pump leaking - Besides rocks I actually work full time doing construction. The main thing I have done over the past 12 years is Hardwood Flooring. Installs - Repairs and Refinishing. One of our largest money makers is Dishwashers due to leaks (and the steam which vents on the bottom) and the other favorite is ice maker lines on your Fridge. You would not believe how many times these units spring a leak and give us job security Keep that in mind with your appliances - and rather than hardwood floors in the kitchen, stick with Tile, Vinyl, Marmolium etc..

i have to add a bit about the sanitizing issues that a dishwasher does, that hand washing just can't attain. it's all about temperature and killing bacteria. i don't mind licking rocks, but i get a real peace of mind thinking that my dishes are more clean coming out of the dishwasher than i could ever get them done by hand. besides, as another member pointed out, life it too short to do dishes, there is cabbing to be done!

Hey KD, put half a cup of bleach in your rinse water, and hand washed dishes come out sanitized.

We usually wash by hand since we don't have a dishwasher but now that it has been mentioned that rock slabs can be washed in a dishwasher I think I want one-dishwasher, not rocks.
