Has anyone seen the new medium flat rate boxes the post office is putting out? THey are practically useless when it comes to sending rocks of any good size. How much money did they waste on this bright idea??

there has been 2 sizes of medium flat raters - one that is 11 7/8 x 3 3/8 x 13 5/8 = OFRB-2 and the 11 x 8 1/2 x 5 1/2 = OFRB-1
I just went and checked out the online postal store and they have not added any new medium flat raters but did add a new size to the large flat rater

Are they a different size, or just the crappy cheap cardboard? I always reinforce the glued seams with plenty of tape, because rocks put a lotta stress on that little glued tab.

same crappy cheap cardboard, I use 2 flat raters, one flat rate to go inside the other. I just cut the flaps off both top and bottom and trim the sides down by 1/4 inch and stick it inside the one I'm gonna fill up with rocks. No blow-outs that way

I think the padded flat-rate envelopes are the best deal. For when you are sending more than the 2 lb that fit in a small, and the 20 lb that fill a MFRB... $5 and you can fit about 10 lb of rock in there easy. I just ball mine up with plenty of packing tape and good to go!
A padded envelope provides about as much protection as those crappy boxes anyhow...

OK, I went back to the post office this morning and sure enough, I was misinformed by the "substitute" postal worker who was unaware that there were two types of boxes, so, there are no new boxes-just the same crappy boxes as before. I wonder why these places don't train their workers better. I get so tired of going to stores and asking for help, either to be told "I really don't know, I just started.", or my personal favorite-"I'll go to the back and check"-these people are never seen again. Ah, our tax dollars at work-gotta love it-lol. Sorry for the false alarm. lol.

Same old boxes. The flatter ones (sometimes referred to as "shirt boxes") are perfect for shipping 8" and 10" blade boxes. The other medium box is better for bulkier things.

The flat boxes are also good for cutting reinforcement strips for the regular boxes out of. My wife brought some of those home for me by mistake a while back.

You can also order your boxes for free off of USPS online and they will deliver a case of them(also free)( 10 in a case)........I like that,I hate running up town for boxes.... I can just grab and go now........

I have used the longer boxes to ship rocks home. They hold about the same volume(actually a little more)...especially tumbling rough or small cabbing rocks
