I emailed Bob and asked again. Although it seems we have all asked him twice about that great polisher of his. So I wanted to be like Bobby so I made my best stab at it. Started with 8" Crystalite Flex disc. Bought and cut a 1/2 " foam pad from Lowes like goes in front of the sink and is mold proof, contact cemented it to the flex disc. Went to the carpet dept. Got some boat carpet cut it out and cemented the carpet to the foam. Between the flexible backer and the 1/2 foam and the carpet it really wraps around the stone and polishes great. Filled the fibers of the carpet with slurry and let it dry. Now just a quick spray of water and its ready. Made one for Cerium Oxide and one for Aluminum Oxide. The flex pad has 1/4 20 stud so they change out in a snap. And on my Diamond Devil I can turn the RPM down to 200 to 400 and it doesn't sling the polish off. And at the low speed it really grabs the stones and drags out that water shine. I think Bobs is turning about 400 RPM and he gets a great shine. And he mentioned he wanted to slow it down a little more. Just like Bobby!

Sweet! I may be able to use something like this on my new homemade grinder/polisher. The variable speed motor that I used should work great for lower rpm's.

Hey Mia. Boat carpet is like real fine, real short, real fuzzy carpet. Carpet for the skin? Bare feet. Decks, around the pool. Used to see a lot of it in green. Go to the carpet dept. at Lowes. I think its a general indoor outdoor carpet. They had at least 3 colors this being the lightest. It comes in like a 10' roll. But they will bring that big ole machine around and sell you 1' strip of it. That will cover 9 - 12"x12" pads easy. Years of replacements. If you live long enough to wear one out.. lol
PS ... Lowes also sells a great contact cement in small quantities. It is Dap - Weldwood Contact Cement in 3 oz. bottles for about $5. Has a little brush on the cap. Just coat both sides to be glued. Let um sit 5 min. .... Careful.. You get one chance. Line it up. And stick it down. Rub and press it out real good. You can use it almost immediately. But its best to let it set up just a bit to overnight. Have fun...Jim

Another material you may want to try out is a carpet tile normally used in commercial offices. They are 18" square and is a short pile carpet bonded to a rubber backing so no need to buy extra foam for backing. Go to a carpet showroom and ask for some samples or even any old cut tiles or some they removed from a office job. Then just use spray adhesive to mount to backing plate.
