Just got new shipment in on Sat. afternoon, so today was PLAY-TIME. Started three different stones, finished all but don't have pictures yet that do the rather strange "Biggs" justice. The first was an extra send by the seller. No idea as to its ID. , but I think I saw material like it under the name of Zebra... something. Waste not, want not, so I just followed the main-shape of the original fragment and kept the hook. Just for fun, and just an experiment, so, anything goes I suppose. chuckle02 The second one did not have much to offer to my liking, but I gave it a try anyway. Its huge (for me) but feels light like feather. Dechutes I think you call it. Started out as a pedal-shaped idea. Misjudged the proportions and had to do some corrections. By doing that, I ground to hard on the lighter/softer side just under the dark top. Ok, was a typical novice mistake, but then looking at it, I realized that if I got the lighter part into shape, I could still keep all the dark upper parts and get a balanced yet unique shape. In addition to the shape, you might realize something off with the polish. I have not seen mixed polish here yet; but the lighter left side is sanded to 800 grid only. The darker right is fully polished to get additional contrast. The rough and intention Finished In-door Finished Out-Door at last light Thanks for looking, what do you think about mixed polish, have you tried it?

The first one is a Penguin and the second is a Hawk!!! Too cool!!!
I think this type of Zebra Stone is a type of Dolomite. But unless someone else confirms it, don't take my word for it. Jo

Nice and interesting shapes! And I like the duo finish. Adds more interest to an already interesting shape! T

I agree with everyone else. I love the shapes - nice to see something "different". Also the dual polish - nice touch!
The black & white is zebra marble, I believe it's from Utah.

Thank you all for the kind words.
Ted: I have only one tool in the box; something like a Foredom with Flexishaft and dremel. In this case the shaping comes from using a 35mm cutting-wheel and then using the flat side of it as a grinder. Followed by a Sanding-stick and papers.
The dual finish on the Deschutes, gives this piece the appearance of painted wood. Will try to get a better picture in sunlight today.
The Zebra is very easy to work and takes an extremely quick polish, but I don't think I would actually go out an buy it. It's nice to try out, yet not really what I'm looking for even though it does have a very strong color contrast.

OK, here is a new daylight picture of the Deschute. Inset to show you the difference in the suns reflection accross the different finishes and main-picture to show you the true colors (put it in water to remove any other color-interference)
