People always hear about Schiller effect, but when you get it in Fire Agate its unbelievable and even after a few years, I still tend to do a double-take before I realize that there is nothing wrong with my eyes. roar29

Thank you kk. This effect is very hard to capture in still photos.

Oooh that's a nice one! I never have good luck when cutting fire agate. You did a great job on that.

Christopher will probly tell you it starts with look a lot, grind a little , look some more, for me it takes about 3-4 times as long to cut a fire agate, if its a weird shape even longer, but the reward is worth it..

LOL Thats pretty much how it goes, but it gets easier if you start with a windowed piece before going into a fully-fledged rough! ;D

Looks like Rons has me down! I cut opal before I started cutting Fire Agate and I had read a couple of Paul B. Downing books. He suggest the cut a little look a lot technique. Worked well for Opal so I used it to cut Fire Agate as well. Works good for me.
KK is right when he says it is easier to start with windowed material. You are able to see the fire better and makes it much easier to see if there are more fire layers under the top.
With true rough that still has the Chalcedony cap the trick is to examine the stone using a bright light to shine through the stone. You want to try and see where the color starts. When you think you found it cut the cap off a little above where you think the color line is. Then grind down to the color. Some people tumble off the cap. I did this once and ground some fire away so now I do it manually.
I hope this helps you a little.
Thank you everyone for your kind comments. As some of you know I really love cutting Fire Agates and Opal. I will cut more as time permits
