I've collected Unakite from Lake Superior which has been rounded by the waves and was wondering seeing as I have the shape I want already, can I skip Step 1 of a tumbling phase and jump in #2 or should I just start from the beginning?

If it doesn't have any pits you should be fine. 220 will not remove pits though.

A lot of the beach rock I gather goes right into med, long as its not pitted. Should be about the same deal. Later Clyde

I used to tumble a lot of beach rocks and found at least a short run (like 3-5 days or maybe a week) in 60/90 was beneficial. You usually have deep scratches that show up later and it helps to clean and remove any organic material.

I'm with John. A week in 60/90 won't hurt anything and might be very beneficial.

I have collected and tumbled Unakite from Lake Superior myself. I have found some ready for the medium grit, but it seems the feldspar and epidote erode differently, so the water "smoothed" stones actually have an orange peel texture if you look closely. I usually tumble them in 60/90 for at least a short time.
