Here's a piece of India I've had laying around for years. I cut the heel off it many years ago and had plans to cut a sphere from it. Everytime I work out back I look at it, and finally I chucked it up and split it in half.... Turned out Fantastic! - However I think a sphere would have been jaw dropping. Oh well! Size on this specimen is 4.25" tall and 6.50" wide.

Nice! I've looked at the black (and white Snakeskins) on line. Some of them resemble Montana agate. Never seen one like that though.

Very true - In fact I have seen on eBay over the years people selling blackskin as Montana. Sometimes slabs are hard to tell.

What a beauty. Glad you decided to open it up. That banding is really impressive. Steve

Wonderful specimen. I love this stuff. I'm afraid I must have been one of those guilty offering India Blackskin as Montana for over a decade. As some of you know, my material came from estates, and I had no idea how little my mentors who helped me ID the stones really knew back in the day. I was finally tipped off on this very site by some helpful individuals when I was trying to clear my last two boxes of unopened nodules. I had more than I could ever dream of working, but I still have a few holdbacks in my own collection. One of my favorite patterns is what I think of as the leaping pony pattern, but I gotten love those wonderful bands you found!

I`m sure it would have been a beautiful sphere but look at all of the material and banding you would had lost to get it down to an orb. Keeping those bands together is worth it to me.
