After Krystee of tntmom showed us such fantastic Obsidian's, I had to try it too! While I certainly don't have the skills yet to compete with Krystee I do have some nice material to work with. I think it's Mahogany Obsidian. Super material that I got earlier this year from Bob of Bobby1. I wanted to do some light carving, so I had to do a test-cab first to get acquainted with the material: Fantastic material, yet so hard to get a good picture out of it. In the end, angles and light give a never-ending perspective. Thank you Krystee for your fantastic teasers and reminding us how fantastic this material can be. And extra thanks goes to Bob, for making it possible for me to work this fantastic material. Carved piece awaits final polish and pictures; will follow in a few days in the carving section. Best regards, and thanks for looking, Kurt

Paul; sorry this is all one and the same stone.
Forgot to mention its dimensions: it's 65 x 20 x 4 mm

Thanks everyone.
Adrian; actually its easier to work with than expected. Had a harder time with some agates in the past, plus as you will see in a couple of days, its something rather simple. Even got a name for it already after something in line with my idea was suggested: "Safe Tonight"

cab looks great! obsidian tends to spall and chip out with carving when using lower grit burrs

Yeah, had that problem mostly with the cutting-wheel on both pieces. I don't know the seizes on the burrs, but remember only a minor small spot that gave some trouble. Yet easily corrected with sanding-paper.

I have medium grit burrs that I think are 400 - 600 grit and they work great on obsidian and other chippy material like common opal/opal

WhooHoo Kurt!!! Cab looks AWESOME and am sitting on pins and needles awaiting your carving!!! Btw, Bob would need to verify but I think your material looks like Mahogany Lace from Glass Buttes, OR. I have a box of this stuff that still needs cutting, some of my favorite material!!!

In this case: Sanding at 400,600,1200g followed by 8000 silicon paste and 50K diamond paste and finished with 3000g sand-paper.
Tried a dusting with Oxide but this gave some areas a somehow milky apperance. The 3000g got ridd of it again.
