We have just come back from a trip south to Don Nelson's Cuestra Mine Fire Agate fee dig. A days worth of busting rock with a big hammers, chisels, and pry bars yielded sixty five pounds of material all with fire. The earth did not give this material up with ease, I worked my but off for all of it, which left me both sore, and happy. Anyone wanting to dig some fine fire should visit Dons mine. When finished digging, I cleaned up the hole, and brought home the muck from the hole too. I recovered three quarts of fire Agate from six gallons of rock, and clay. Along the way there, and back, we stopped for rock in a few other places as well. One place we stopped on old Route 66, we found Travertine had been used for road fill. It is pretty solid material, and lacey too. Wow what an epic adventure and what a fine haul. Never heard of palm ridge before but it sure looks like you scored some fine palm fiber there. Is it in California, as fiber is not all that common in California? Mostly palm root in the places Ive gone. That Fallon wonderstone is very cool too....Mel

Mel, Palm Ridge is at the East end of Mule Canyon. It is the site of the Palm Ridge Borax works. Woody, the travertine looks like "Strawberry Onyx". It is in the Ludlow area (about 10 miles northeast). The road in was closed but I heard a powerline road goes near enough to hike in. I've got a boulder here my dad and a friend collected but never found anyone to cut. Glad you found some nice palm there. I usually find non gemmy palm there. Guess I'll have to dig a little. Mel, you are right. Root is much more common in that area.

Ah - to have the time to roam the earth and rip it apart for its glorious treasures!!!!!
Before my lil one was born, I was able to sneak off and do 4 day hunts. Now I'm fortunate to make it out a day out.
Thanks for sharing. Love the loot!!!

The "Fallon Wonderstone" looks alot like pet wood with the lines and what appears to be knot holes...just an observation Great find.....Don Nelson only lives about 40 minutes from me. 5 hours if you go by the way of the black mountain back roads...and you don't look down...cause you will deffinately stop on the way there for some awesome rock hounding. thanks steve
