I have been cabbing for nearly exactly a year now, and have always been envious of all those super finishes people are able to come up with. Finally I found the right sequence for me (sanding-paper 240/400/600/1200 grid). The only difference to what I have done before is including the step at 400. Since the Obsidian, I have redone 10 of my favorite cabs including the Jade Hand. For so long, I have been standing in front of Jade-shops, wondering in despair as to how they can get such a "Water"finish. Today, I stood there thinking "Hey, I can do better than you guys". What a wonderful feeling. Have been trying the sequence on a variety of material, but still had to try it out from scratch. So I tried some Jaspers Noreen, "Phoenix Rising" This wonderful material that Sara send me earlier this year, Asteroid Jasper And my entry for a contest, Porcelain Jasper " A Winters Night", Can you see the Snow-queen smelling her bouquet of ice-flowers? Now, I gotta figure out how to take pictures avoiding the gloss. Thanks for looking

Awesome shine! Some of those materials are not that easy to achieve that kind of shine on too. I see a bunch of skulls on the lower right of your snow queen cab.....Mel

I love seeing your beautiful work. Are you hand sanding those stones? That would make me really impressed. It took me a while but then the faces just popped out. I remember the hand from before and it shines much better now. Thank you for showing your great photos. Jim

Thank you for the kind comments. Paul: the contest is just for fun and its a way for us to keep improving ourselves. Jim: I cracked too many stones by overheating stones. So, I started to sand everything by hand, gives me more control and can be done anywhere anytime. Heck, I sometimes have paper and stone in hand when conducting class, and no-one minds or even knows.

Those are great !!! I used my sanding belts by hand , on the softies i done yesterday, it was quite enjoyable , very easy to see what needed to be sanded from last stage .

Ted, As I do not have the need to work stones on the clock, I find quite a few advantages in sanding by hand: I find using sanding-paper is much slower, but its also much cheaper. A square-foot of any grade (except 3000g) costs here about 22cents and you can easily get 6-10 stones out of a set of four. The ones above where only dusted with a used cotton wheel that I used previously with 50K diamond paste. No clean cotton or leather wheels and no oxides for this set at all (tried but did not give any visible improvement). No overheating, so less chances for damaging anything inside a stone. More control on the fluidity of shapes, as it takes longer to develop mistakes. The only real downside is that my fingers hurt. If I would do this daily, I suppose I would have "String fingers" ready to play guitar very soon.

Could not let a perfectly good side go to waste, so I did the back of the Porcelain Jasper, making it into a doublesided cab.

Very pretty pieces. Don't think I'd ever want to sand by hand though, I'm not nearly patient enough for that.
