Hi, new guy here. Looking for a rotary tumbler with maybe a 5 pound screw top container... don't like the Lortone with the complicated nut/washer/cap/disc etc... or the Thumbler with the disc + band that leaks unless you use a lot of Vaseline... I've used both of them ... any ideas? Oh I tried to search this board but the search either "takes too long and a report was filed" or the word "top" is too short... screwy search function...

I prefer the model B type barrels, they are either 12 or 15 lb barrels but the lid CANNOT pop off.
The only other ones that I know of are home made ones and there are lots of different varieties of those.

Well, it's not a screw top, but you can get a Thumler's Model B and divide into halves, but you'll have to find a used Star Diamond barrel liner to do it. I see them fairly often on ebay or at swap meets.
Or you can build your own barrels out of PVC and use a test plug as a cap.

Oh yeah, good one Chuck.
Come to think of it, I do have one of those out in the shed somewhere. If you are interested in it, I could go dig it out.

Barranca makes a really nice 6 lb. inclined tumbler with a screw on cap. On sale but still expensive.

Covington uses a slip in aluminum plug that is held in place with a hose clamp. If you think they art spendy now just wait. They Xeroxed a copy of their new catalog on it's way to the printers for me. The tumblers are going up any day. I couldn't pin them down on when new prices would be effective.

I believe the main reason that not many tumbler barrels have threads is the obvious problem of getting grit down in the threads. You may end up cementing the cap in place with enough crud getting in. Any threads would need to be on the outside of the barrel.

Barranca incline barrel has the threads on outside. Works very well and faster than normal due to incline design. Price ($250 on sale, $475 list) keeps it out of most people's toy chest.

I use the thumlers (both 3 Lb and 12 Lb.) and have had very few problems with leaking. THe trick (i have found in 5+ years using them) is to make sure the barrel grove is SQEAKY clean!!! I use and old toothbrush, dish soap and clean water to achieve this. Very very important! I love those Barrancas but as John points out- the price is a deciding factor!

OK I went with the Thumbler's Model B #140 -- but made the mistake of ordering it from erocktumbling.com ...
Their contact page says "Orders are processed during business hours. Most orders are processed within a 24-hour period and will be shipped out the next business day after receiving the order. If for some reason this process is not completed within the allotted time, you will be notified of the delay. We will also notify you when the order is processed and on its way."
I got an immediate email order acknowledgement, but after six days without hearing from them regarding delay or shipment, I cancelled the order and ordered from 4facets.com . 4facets shipped the same day and sent me the tracking number.
Lo and behold, the next day (yesterday) I get a shipment notification from bestservicestores.com that they shipped (four days earlier) the erocktumbling order.. and it arrived that day !!
So erocktumbling ( their phone is answered by hobbywarehouse.com ) seems to be just a drop-ship outfit. Beware. I am going to work on a return of their (?) shipment, which I have not opened.
4facets has a higher shipping cost (they are further away from me) but if I need more supplies I will call them.
