Just drew up something I was thinking about and completely misjudged the effort needed to get a reasonably well shaped design. I salute nature, and... the creatures who build that stuff every day. Thanks for looking

Its something for the future. Will try to cut it over the holidays, but ..... Still looking for material to do a bee without having to tread it. Amber,.... mhhh sounds good too, but a bit more expensive than this Montana.

Any suggestions as what material is out there to get the body of a bee. Needs to be hard enough not to be needing glue, and banding Needs to be suitable for a one centimeter overall length.
Thanks for any suggestions you might have, Kurt

I have some yellow and black banded material but the black is the thicker material. I will get some pics sent off tomorrow. Sleepy time now. Jim

Looks like a great project.
As for the bee, maybe some banded tiger eye/mara mamba?

You are sooooo creative Kurt! I'll be looking forward to this finished piece!!!
As far as material.... I've seen some great bumblebee jasper cabs. Never seen the material in person so I don't know if the banding would be suitable for a centimeter. I've heard it's pretty soft too but... I don't know. Looks just like a bee though!

A simplification from a former (part time) keeper: Honey comb is really just parallel rows of circles, each row starting 1/2 circle off-center from the adjacent row. Wax fills in the spaces between all the circles, and it looks like hexagons, when actually the inside of a cell is really more a circle. BTW, the diameter of the inside of a honeybee cell is about 5mm.

Yeah , I wondered about the round shape last night as I was looking for cell distributions on google. I thought about marramamba this morning and will have a closer look at what I have got when I get back home. Tiger eye might do well too. Bumble bee: while some members have had quite some success with it, everyone is still warning about the possible problems with finishing it up and fractures. I don't worry much about the finish as most of the body will end up under either labradorite or quartz wings anyway, but the color needs to be easy to spot. In the meantime, thanks for all the recommendations, let's see where I'm goi g to end up.

Depending on how big you plan that bee, you could make a multiple layered "sandwich" from tiger eye and some black rock, glue it with epoxy and then use it for the bee's body.

I was thinking bumble bee jasper too. I would imagine a 1 cm circle should be easy to get without fractures. I think Adrian's tiger eye idea is pretty cool too.

Here is the banded magnatite and something that is yellow. The yellow is much more yellow in person than it is in the pics. The stones are from 60 to 70 mm long and the yellow bands vary from one to three mm thick. It is yours if you want it because I have no use for it. I have a lot of other pieces that would not work for what you are doing but will fulfill my needs. Jim
