I am new to tumbling about 3 day new. My 7yo daughter got me started. We pick up a tumbler with all the fixings’ and it came with some beginners mix rough to start with.
The mix came with some 1/2 round slices of rock (I am sure there is a name for them just not up on the jargon just yet). They are about 3mm thick. I took them out of the mix and added some rocks from around the yard to get the tumbler filled to the proper level. But my question is can they be tumbled? They are cut very smooth save for the edge. And my daughter likes them as is so I am just going to let her keep them that way. But in the future I would like to know if they can be tumbled.
Thanks
PS: MANY more questions to come. So get your beginner hats back out.

Hi oghoagie, WELCOME!!!
Sounds like little slabs off the saw. Look for Snuffy's posts in the rock tumbling photo section. He has some great photo's of how well slabbettes turn out. Beautiful results! They make great pendants too!

What Krystee said. Sometimes Ill kinda form a rock and throw it in tumbler. Theyll usually come out of tumbler polished both sides good nuff fer a pendant. Then ya get into vibe tumblers and theres guys here who cab a stone then put it into vibe. Inna nut shell, let the creative juices flow and xperiment. Welcome to the craziness. Later Clyde

1/2 round slices of rock? Do you mean they are flat on one side and domed on the other? Whatever they are, just through them in and see what happens. I cut rocks into slices using a wet tile saw and I just polish them in my tumbler with all the other rock. I haven't had one break yet.

Yes they can be polished. Course sounds like you won't be getting them away from your daughter anyway!

Well thank you for the help everyone. I will keep them in the next batch to see what we get. they are "slabs" I am learning so much from you folks already. I hope to be a true rockhound someday! My Daughter is checking the tumbler 2Xs a day to make sure it is running properly and not leaking. She is very excited about Sunday. That is when our first stage is going be be done. I think she will be up @ 6am that day.
So I will be asking step 2 questions in 4 days or so. thanks again Hoagie.

Inspect the stones thoroughly to ensure that they are completely smooth before moving on to the next grit. Sometimes, stones will have to be ran though fresh coarse grit once a week for several weeks before switching to a finer grit.
