My wonderful sister got me a tumbler for Christmas. We celebrated early and I have been tumbling since. Today I am ready for the polish stage. I feel my rocks have lost a lot of character by becoming so smooth. My question is can you keep a stone jagged/pointy/rough and polish it? Will it polish without the prior stages? Will that hurt my tumbler? Thank you for the input in advance.

If you want shiny rocks that still have their original shape, vibratory tumblers are the way to go. They smooth the surfaces without rounding the edges.

Are you using a rotary tumbler or a vibratory tumbler? What kind of rock are you tumbling, is it all the same stuff, or is it a mixture of different kinds of rocks? Is it broken stuff with really sharps edges and concave surface areas, deeply pitted agates, stuff from the beach, or something in between those descriptions?
Generally speaking, if the rocks have lost too much of their original shape, then you left them in the 60/90 too long. As already stated though, you can't skip any stages.

Good advice. But I have a question. You got the tumbler for Christmas, and celebrated early . . . Christmas was only 1 week ago; when did you start tumbling? If it's only been a short while & your rocks are smooth, perhaps they are very soft? Just wondering, since more info is needed to give proper answers to your questions. My :2cents: :2cents:
