I have another type of rock I'd like to identify. We find this on the beaches around Alpena, MI. It's not uncommon but I almost always pick it up when I see it. I think it might be chert. It's sort of waxy looking and usually has whitish parts on it. It comes in several different colors. Is it good for tumbling? Is the whitish part the same type of rock? Here's a picture: Attachments:

Those are what I refer to as chert. I tumble it and it gets shiny but not as shiny as most jaspers. Scott

Thanks for the help. I'm almost 100% sure that it's not agate, because as far as I know those are only found in Lake Superior. I'm finding them in Lake Huron or nearby inland lakes. I don't think we have petrified wood around here either. I know that there is jasper in pudding stones, but I'm not sure if it occurs much around here other than that. So it's probably chert at Scott suggested.
Thanks again, Rob
