Found this one on the Wall Street Journal website. It is a few years old so you may have already seen it...but it is still a good indicator of how well off you are - on a global basis. Link to your personal wealth standing: www.globalrichlist.com/This is the article in full blogs.wsj.com/wealth/2007/02/01/the-rich-o-meter/tab/print/They had another article about the record number of wealthy blogs.wsj.com/wealth/2011/06/22/u-s-has-record-number-of-millionaires/I applaud all those who have found happiness without wealth, truly wonderful and that is how we should all live our lives. I used to think that money didn't matter and that it didn't buy happiness; I still feel one should have no trouble being happy without wealth but at the same time I now realize how important money can be. For Example...If I want to live in Texas or Florida or Maine and go rockhounding in the Fairburn agate beds of South Dakota, It costs a bit of cash....and rockhounding in someone elses back yard does make me happy. I could be happy without the trip to South Dakota, but I think I am happier with it. If I didn't have the money to make the trip, I would not want to go there, so having the money makes me happy if I use it for that but I could have used it for something else that might have made me even happier (or not)...I am such a flip-flopper! No amount of money, cars, Ipods, or anything else can make you happy. The only thing or person in this world that can make you happy is yourself.

Yup, Happy is in yore head not your pocketbook. We should all be thankful to live here in the good ole US of A though because according to Chas' link, 35K a year puts you in the top 4.6% of the world wealth wise. Puts into perspective just how lucky we are and how poor folks are in some other countries.....Mel

Happiness is in direct relation to what is Happening in my live.
The trick for me is to focus on all the good things that are Happening, rather than the opposite.
When I operate from a full cup perspective and I remain grateful for all God has given me...I am one happy camper.

I agree that life is what we make it; I control whether I'm happy or not.
The older I get, the less I'm interested in material things (even rocks).
Having said that, I would be quite happy to be independently wealthy and never have to work again.

35k would be tough to live on. I've had nothing and I've made good money, and I'd rather have money. Hard to be happy and broke with bill collectors phoning every day.
