:DHello everyone, Ed Myhro here. I went to the river today and picked up some really nice white quartz rock. They already look very smooth with just a few with slight pits. My question is can I skip the 80 rough grit and go to step two grit to save time and resources? Any help would be appreciated.

Ed, I have never been as successful, even with "pre-polished" rocks, when I skipped the first stage. But that being said, you have nothing to lose by trying it. The worst that will happen is that you will start over at 80 grit. Well, you will lose one thing; you won't know if they would have been better if you had started at 80. Why not try a batch each way?

By all means skip it, I do this regularly with quartz pebbles from the ocean. I use them as fill (top off the load) for my 220 stage grind. I see no difference in the final polish.

If they have pits starting out they will have pits when you finish. I found when doing beach rocks they always came out better with at least a short run in coarse (like 4-5 days).

Yeah, I tried that with beach rocks. It works except if there are pits in the rocks you maybe want to go back to the rough anyway. Steve
