Are rubber barrels 'virtually silent', or is that just something people say to sell tumblers? I am in a flat so i need the quietest option that doesn't involve polishing by hand thanks!

You can't get away from all the noise when rocks roll around. The rubber barrel tumblers I've used remind me of the sound at the beach when waves push rocks around. You can decrease sound a little by putting carpet or other sound deadening material under the tumbler as long as it doesn't obstruct the motor air flow or filll the motor with carpet fuzzies.

Yup, it sounds like a muffled rumble. The smaller the tumbler barrel the quieter it is. I used to have rock tumblers in a spare bedroom and they were fine. As John says, ocean waves. After a while you get so used to it that you miss the noise when it's gone.
Hey, that gives me a great idea! You know those white noise makers to lul your baby to sleep? How about a rock tumbler rumbling along in the corner! That way baby will get a good night's sleep and mom and dad get pretty rocks! Kidding, that's probably the worst idea ever. Nobody do that. Please. Last thing you want is a constantly moving electircal device full of colorful choking hazards around a baby.

Yes as John says above
Rubber muffles the sound plastic does not
The alternative Plastic barrel is a lot noiser

i had my friends (two geologists) look at my found beach rocks today, mostly brecciated jaspers with some purples and browns, some flints and quartz and they said they will all tumble up nice which is good!
