Hey Roller - I've been bothered by this one ever since you posted it and I think I've found what it is. The book Geodes: Nature's Treasures by Cross and Zeitner has a chapter on South Dakota geodes termed "Rattle Rocks". They are from the area around Imlay. The book says "thousands" of geodes were removed from there and that there were multiple beds. Your coloration matches the exterior of those pictured in the book, with a large void and white crystal interior. I have tried to find photos on the internet to compare, but I've found none, except for a cover shot itself, which shows a barite geode from South Dakota in the bottom right corner. See it here: www.amazon.com/Geodes-Treasures-Brad-Lee-Cross/dp/1889786322I hope this helps. Lowell

On that first one, try contacting Bob Morgan, sdgoldpanner. He's spent a good part of his life collecting rocks in western S.D. -- He may be able to id it for you, and give you a location where they're found.

Wow nice geode. I'm not much help on this one except to say it does not appear to be a geode form the formations that yield all the geodes from Iowa, Indiana, Tenn etc. as the exterior just appears too smooth and uniform....Mel

Looks a lot like the rind found on S.D. septarians.
