I watched today on Discovery a movie with explanations about the US states' shapes. Very interesting stories, some of them almost unbelievable.

War, slavery, railroads, trade, earthquakes, voting rights, natural resources, the Erie Canal just to name a few...and of course, greed.

There are also a lot of "guesses and bluffs" that have created state boarders and the U.S/Canada border. In many cases small areas weren't defined, agreements were lost/forgotten and the state/country that acted like it belonged to them eventually won. Most of these border issues result from the Monarch Wars of the 1700s culminating with the French and Indian War. Because relaively small areas of land was won and lost so many times between the French and English (colonists), people just stopped knowing where the real boarders were. Many of the "lost" agreements were rediscovered over time but in most cases the sides elected to let sleeping dogs lie. From Michigan to Maine, there are many research supported border issues with Canada. I always thought this would make a great Discovery program.
