I was watching a re-run of the film a few nights ago and picked on a couple of things that hadn't registered the first time of viewing. The banker (wrongly convicted) made an approach to Morgan Freeman (Red) to get a rock hammer. Red asked why? and the banker said I'm interested in rocks and he picked up some pebbles from the exercise yard. The banker said these are mostly Schist and I'm looking for Alabaster to make some chess pieces. So Red says you know about rocks and the banker says, I was a rock-hound on the outside. Later towards the end of the film, the banker directs Red to a secret location marked by a stone that has no earthly reason to be there. (meteorite). I would never have taken note of these passages except for becoming a member of this board. The other thing was the price of the Rock Hammer, Top of the range $7.

I can't believe they were not factual! Usually movies never embellish. It was a pretty good movie anyway. If I remember right by the end it is clear he did kill his wife. He also used the rock pick to tunnel out more so than collect rocks.

My brother in law did all of the signs in the movie and unwisely took $100 instead of getting his name in the credits.
Little did he know that the movie would get an enormous cult following where his name would appear every time the movie did...

No, John, he did NOT kill his wife. You sure as heck don't remember that one right. The whole point of the story is spoiled if you don't understand that you are dealing with an innocent man.
About halfway or so through the movie, the actual murderer confesses to the crime to another prisoner but the warden will not investigate our hero's evidence because he wants to keep our hero as an unpaid tax advisor/slave. There was never any legal way for the innocent banker to prove his innocence. He had no choice but to make up the story to get the rock hammer and start on the trail to the great escape.

Regardless to factuallity, it was/is a wonderful movie and I think it brought Freeman the recognition that he deserved. I for one, look forward to a movie with him in it since this one.

I'll have to watch it again. I don't remember what I did yesterday too well.

It's been a long time since I saw the movie, but didn't the banker carve a chess set from stone?

Yah, he had to have a reason to have the rock hobby equipment, other than tunneling out of his cell at night!!! I seem to remember something about chess pieces too.
