Greg I like your approach to creativity. Although, a box? That is certainlu thinking out of the box LOL I like the idea of spray on but I think I will wait til I have the equpment to finish it without a clear coat. Now Jim how can I ever thank. To think that you would do that for me. Allow me to cut a third off the slab and let you make a cab in a contest that you will one of the judges. Just one question. What will the prize be after I WIN? LOL Stu

Well, if I owned that big slab, what I'd do is get a shadow box picture frame, (very plain frame that's mde of something in a not competing color like white or better, clear lucite), take the glass part if any out and get rid of it (use it for the triplet cab part:P). Then buy/make at least TWO (or MORE) mats that fits the frame perfectly, and will together be the thickness of the slab (can get this at any craft shop, but make sure it fits inside the frame before you walk out of the store). You can get these either the exact same hole size so the slab looks like it's in a windowbox, or make the inside ones just 1/4" thicker so it's more dimensional). Once you get home, glue the slab with something that won't fall off (epoxy is best) onto the back (preferably a solid black or better, white or ivory mat). Then stack your mats around it, and you have a Gallery piece you can hang on the wall:). Write with pencil at the bottom right corner the name of the rock and where you got it (don't do this til you practice writing a bunch of times), with the date. It's an heirloom. Here's one place that sells them to give you an idea, but there are no mats (get mats, they add a LOT to the look): www.yourpictureframes.com/categories/Shadow-Box-Picture-Frames/Here's another one (cheaper to do it yourself by going to a craft shop and buying the frame and mat I think - but see the guitar? That's the idea: www.pictureframes.com/html/shadowbox.htmlOh! I found a matted one: shop.hobbylobby.com/products/triple-mat-shadow-box-frame-177667/You know... I can't believe no one has already thought of this for slabs!!! I thought for sure I'd find something when I started searching, but nope. Here's the closest thing I found to what I'm thinking of, but it's shells, and it's not matted. It will give you an idea of what I mean tho: www.accent-furniture-direct.com/Phoenix-Galleries-Chambered-Nautilus-Shadow-Box-HS3-PHG1854.html

Gee thanks Helen, That is a grest way of displaying the slab. The shadow box really draws the viewer into the piece. That coupled with the great depth in the slab itself will make this look almost like a window that is looking out upon those beautiful rolling hills. With just the right type of task lighting that shines precisely upon the slab. I would want the interior of the shaddow box to be in a flat black color to set off te beautiful colors of the slab. You have a great artistic eye. Thanks for the suggestion and all of the research that you put into your post. Stu

My vote is to face polish it as a display/museum piece.

Yes I agree with you all I will save it till I can polish and display it. I like the idea that Helen had with the shadow box. Thanks again everyone for your kind and informative feedback. I will update you when the piece is finished. If anyone is iterested in getting some of this material in comparable size and condition send me a PM. Stu
