Personally. Not that i know much but I would hate to see you cut that beautiful piece. Cabs can not show the wonderful flowing motion.

You know I'm going to say leave it as a big specimen - it's magnificent!! Do you have the means to polish it?

I think you are right Steve.. This slab is just to perfect. Right now have not the equipment that would be needed to polish it. I will leave it in tact until I am capable of polishing it. I wonder what size machine I would need to polish this piece. It is just over 10" Stu

I would cut it on either the left or the right side, so it could stand. Use the small cut off end for cabs, and use the rest of this beautiful piece for display.

I thought it was already a slab? I don't think I'd cut one of those naturally articulated edges off. It would just make it look... cut. A decent slab stand would hold that one great when finished.
You could do it on an 8" expando drum pretty easily. Now if you had TWO of them I'd start talking to you about doing the work on shares :-)

I would not cut it just get a slab stand the natural edges look nice on a polished slab. I use an angle grinder with Silicon Carbide sand paper discs. Used for granite you can get them pretty cheep. A Velcro backer is $15 the grinder $35 and the sanding discs are like a buck each. Might be worth it if you plan to polish other slabs. www.braxton-bragg.com/index.cfm/m/1/fuseaction/store7catalog.level/bc/0,8446,8485/ Jason

As big as that slab is, it's probably worth it to buy sandpapers for hand-polishing?
There's actually a far easier alternative for display... coating it:).
1. oiling it would give you 'the wet look' without any damage to the rock (baby oil). 2. A more permanent solution would be painting the rock with any acetone removable varnish (as someone said, clear spray paint). 3. A strength reinforcing alternative would be to paint it with a UV 2-part epoxy (only removable by very very careful heating).
Polishing it is the best idea, but if you are lazy (like me), you may want to explore these other alternatives:).

That is one of the coolest looking slabs I think I've ever seen. I agree, I'd face-polish that critter and put it on a display stand.

Polish it first of course, but you could cut it rectangular, frame it without the glass, and hang it on the wall. Like at a motel though, screwed to the wall so it won't fall off and break (or get stolen, in case you have friends like mine).

Try Deft clear gloss wood finish. Works for me, and dries really fast (spray lacquer). Don't even think of cutting it. A 15" flat lap is the best tool for the job.

Stu, Cut that thing vertical into thirds, send one to me, send one to a lesser friend and we will have a contest to see who can make the best cab. I volunteer to be one of the judges also. I am always ready to jump in and help a friend, friend. Jim
