Hey Guys An acquaintance of mine went meteorite hunting Basically a magnet on the end of a stick operations So Boom ! First stop and his magnet picks this materiel up Many little pieces and this large piece Its not meteor-- and it not man made So I guess he found an iron ore seam ? How unusual is this? What other minerals might be associated if this location as a metal bearing vein? Thanks much! Ed

I guess the first question would be, where was it found? Is there anything like a geological survey of the county that might help explain it?
For my benefit, as I know nothing about this, how does one know it's not meteorite? I assume you've been able to eliminate the possibility that it's something like slag from a steel mill fallen off a rail car, right?
My guess is he just found some magnetite, possibly not common, but probably not too unusual.

Thanks guys !
I'm not sure what the fine distinction is between magnetite and hematite ? I don't believe the stone as any magnetic attraction itself like a lodestone If I got that distinction right.
It was found out in the desert N.W. of Phoenix I'm working with the person because I believe its a fairly significant find as far as mineralized area's goes

Ed, Magnetite is naturally magnetic on it's own. Kind of softer and dustier in texture too. Hematite is a rich iron ore and can be magnetized and is often attracted to a magnet. It's harder and often will take a good polish. Very messy to work though and turns everything red....Mel

Thanks Mel !
He wanted me to cut/and or polish a piece but I sort of resisted I could see it would be real messy and didn't want to messing with any specimen while trying to figure out what it is
pure hematite too, I figure I'm hoping he'll take me out to the site I'm real interested in kicking some of those rocks around
I really appreciate it!!! Ed
