Those suckers give me the impression that they are quite rare and expensive. Beautiful pieces. Bob

Yah... I've never seen anything like petrified pine cones before either! They look a little bit like the ammonites from madagascar... but even cooler! Have you ever seen opalized pinecones like the ammonites? That would be an incredible specimen. Pines grow near water too...

WOW, those are treasures!
A quick search on google shows nothing as colorful as your pieces, yet asking-price starts at 600$.

Just when you thought that you have seen it all Steve brings forth PINE CONES. My mind is now racing to think of what other treasures are awaiting us. If it is petrified I am sure Steve has it. What a collection!!!!
Thanks for the posting ;D Stu

I am lucky enough to have such a pine cone bought from Steve. Not only the polished section is interesting, but also the outer surface which preserved very well the cone pattern and was naturally polished by the winds over the time. Mine even has the cute tail attached.

I'm glad everyone enjoys them. They are a favorite to cut to be sure. No less exciting than a top end fortification agate because the surprise that could be waiting in that first cut covers such a broad spectrum.
And the speculation is correct - the best of the best can fetch a small fortune, just like agates but even rarer. The best cones ever found came from Argentina, but laws passed a few years ago now prohibit the export of any plant fossils so what's in circulation now is all there is likely to ever be.
On the upside I do have quite a few pieces and chunks that are too small or shaped wrong to make full cross sections. I think anyone who can grind a cab could work one or two faces on one of these stones and produce a pretty amazing specimen. Heck they're even cool if you leave them untouched! Not all of them have the color contrast and agate inclusions that these shown here do, but you won't know until you begin cutting it and even the worst of them is still fascinating and of sufficient agate content to take a nice polish.
Alternatively I do auction lesser (but still very nice and always perfectly polished) cones on eBay and try to keep one up at least every other week. Sometimes these go pretty cheap (cheap is always relative but I've had slabs sell at auction for less than I would price them out for direct sale so if you watch you can probably find a deal).
