Since Andrew had the opportunity to go rock hounding on Friday, Nathaniel requested the opportunity on Saturday. We planned on going to Calico Ghost Town first to do some sight-seeing and ride the little mining train and then go to Yermo to do some digging. Since Nathaniel and I would have all day on Saturday and Friday night is potluck night with our friends from Church, I let Nathaniel sleep in on Saturday and figured we'd leave around 9-ish or so.
Well, Saturday started off horribly. Our last cat, Buddy took a turn for the worst and needed to be put down. He'd been with us for 17 years and developed cancer late last year. This morning, he was done - his eyes said it all - he was hurting so bad and the vet had already done all that he could. So, we packed up the boys and took Buddy to the Vet. We let Andrew and Nathaniel say good bye and Barbara and I stayed with Buddy while the Vet administered the sedative and put him to sleep. Our cats are now all gone: Katie had to be put down in 2009, Wendy in 2011, and now Buddy, the elder statesman. Thanks for letting me get that out, my friends. It's cathartic.
Andrew had his basketball game today so Barbara took him. He also had some friends coming over so there was a good distraction for him and Barbara. I already had my Intrepid packed and Nathaniel and I left for Calico and Yermo.
First stop: Peggy Sue's 50's Diner but not to have lunch. We wanted to see the armored vehicles that the Marines were staging there. What appeared to be a whole company's worth of M1's and M109's were waiting on flatcars. Sorry the photos aren't too clear. I couldn't find the camera - it was somewhere in the trunk - so we resorted to using Nathaniel's DS. It was also really windy today so Nathaniel had his eyes closed in about half the pics.
Next stop - Calico!
On the Train (we rode it twice):
Around Town:
At Yermo. Again, I didn't have the Pilot so we just pulled over and started walking up the dirt roads heading north-west into the hills. We managed to fill one and a half more buckets full of agates. And I managed to find the camera.
On the way home, we stopped for dinner at Del Taco at the intersection of Highways 15 and 138. There's a huge rail junction there in Cajon Pass and Nathaniel's always enjoyed watching the BNSF freight trains rumble through. We had a treat today as we saw a north- and south-bound double-stack freight trains powering through the pass while we ate.
It was a beautiful day to spend outdoors and a great time with Nathaniel. Thanks for checking out the thread.
